I am a Polish student of English currently writing my Master's thesis.

The survey includes a small part of president Obama's inauguration speech from 2009 and then the respondents are asked to rate the speech under various criteria.
Please pick one of the two links randomly:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2383QWP
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/P6CTTKS
The first survey includes a fragment of original Obama's speech in perfect English. The other survey includes a translation of that speech into Globish i.e. harder vocabulary/phrasing is replaced with its easier synonyms.
More on Globish here: globish.com
By means of this survey I plan to check if Globish is suited for formal communication and what are its hindrances and strong points. I will of course share my findings when I get enough responses and analyze them.
If you are curious about the differences in the texts, you are free to read both, fill in both surveys and/or share your opinion on Globish here in the thread
Thank you very much in advance for filling in the survey, possibly sharing it with others and providing any constructive feedback on the topic. ▲ Collapse | | | Sheila Wilson Испания Local time: 17:13 Член ProZ.com c 2007 английский + ...
What a difference there is in those two speeches! I won't say what I thought - don't wish to bias anyone, but it IS interesting. | | | Phil Hand Китай Local time: 01:13 китайский => английский Answered, but... | Jul 29, 2013 |
I think your concepts are a bit too vague. A speech like this is not just "formal communication" - it's persuasive communication. And globish is clearly worse for that.
I also don't think that globish is necessarily English with simpler vocab and phrasing. The vocab can sometimes be more precise than natural English (English speakers love using hyper-vague nouns: stuff, things, issue, etc.), and globish would recast whole sentences into more standard, repetitive patterns. | | | arkhadius Local time: 18:13 польский => английский + ... @Phil Hand, thank you for your comment. Most of the things you mentioned I plan to check in my survey. I just simplified the description not to bias people (too much).
I will gladly post my findings after I finish but I need much more participants for that. So far 17 people filled in the surveys and I am really grateful to them.
The results already start to get interesting so those of you who didn't participate yet, spare those few minutes and see for yourself what this is about ... President Obama speaks in quite plain English -- high quality, | Jul 30, 2013 |
educated English, yet simple, concise, understandable and great. I don't understand the need to simplify it even further. Is Globish like the NASA simplified English -- just simpler words, phrases and grammatical structure, or does it require any other features?
The use of plain English without idioms and any intricacies is required in many international conference settings -- you cannot just use regional, or even more standard idioms, and or speak with very distinctive accents. | | | Balasubramaniam L. Just finished it.
But this text has been widely reported in the media, both TV and print, and is also available on youtube and internet and it is quite possible that people would recall having read or heard it before. I wonder if that would affect the outcome of your survey, and whether you should be using a less publicly available text as your sample to preserve the novelty value of it to the survey taker. | | | arkhadius Local time: 18:13 польский => английский + ... The speech was already translated by Jean Paul Nerriere, which is why I wanted to use it even though it was well-known in the public sphere, but I think enough time has passed that most people would not know it word for word.

I am trying to explore how the use of Globish colors people's perceptions, which would be very important in any context - whether business, conversational, or persuasive. Some of the data already seems to point to a difference in opinion between the two, although I still have too few respondents for the data to be rally tangible.
That said, thank you for all who already filled a survey in and I would like to encourage others
Thanks ▲ Collapse | | | mjbjosh Local time: 18:13 английский => латышский + ...
