Dear friends,
Currently I'm thinking of doing a PhD in the US. But I haven't decided which major to choose. I have finished my bachelor and master degrees in English language and literature. I am interested in research related to cross cultural studies. So could you please offer me some advice as what PhD major would be good?
I would appreciate any suggestions from you!
Thanks a lot!

I don't know if you are interested in education but one suggestion would be to study how ESL (English as a second language) is taught to, and learned by, people from different cultures. You could for example look at the different perceptions they have of the English language, whether they find it easy or difficult, do some methods seem to work better than others, how long it takes them to feel comfortable speaking English, in what situations they tend to fall back on their mother tongue, etc. Of... I understand that you are looking for a program rather than a thesis topic, since a thesis topic is generally decided upon only after consultation with one's professors, advisors, etc. and after writing a few papers and seeing how the research goes on them.
If you are interested in cross-cultural studies, I would strongly suggest Comparative Literature, which contains both literature and elements of sociology, anthropology, cultural studies (and much more). I'm biased, because that's what ... An investment in a PhD is not a small one, so my advice would be to take a serious look at what you are going to do with it after you get it. Perhaps you would become a professor or maybe something else. Among other things, you can contact and survey others who already have PhDs in the field and from that you could have a basis for deciding which options offer the best chance for your own personal success, while being in accord with your own personal inclinations.

To make it simple, it would be best to specialize in something for which a good demand will exist, than in something no one else is interested in.
I would guess professor would be the most viable objective, so universities would be a very good source of information. ▲ Collapse | |
