Chav English (slang) Jan 8, 2009

My 12-year-old son talks to me like that sometimes - 'Mum what is you cooking?' 'I is well going to bed' and raps along with it. He says it's Chav English, i.e. youth slang. I find it really funny.

I forgot: the Tv show with Steve Coogan is Saxondale.

Simplifying the language? Jan 8, 2009

Oh come on, Peter! I've spent most of my life trying to master the language, and now you want to simplify it. You must be kidding!!

I think I read somewhere that Bush also said "Don't misunderestimate me" or something similar. I'm sure if you search the web, you'll find loads of these "Bushisms".

I guess you have a point, Vito Jan 9, 2009

Wouldn't "Off Topic" or "The lighter side of translation" be a better place for the humorous exchange of certain shortcomings in regard to proper language?

Yes, simplification is a natural process. Jan 9, 2009

While I agree that it should be 'Are', not 'Is', I applaud President Bush for taking a step in the right direction -- simplifying our language and getting rid of irregular verbs.

That is one of the advantages arising from the complicated and mixed up origins of English -- Germanic roots, overlaid with Norman French, underpinned by Greek and Latin, and blended with words from almost every other language in the world. Thanks to that, we have got rid of excrescences such as gender that bedevil other languages, and we have simplified most of our verbs. That trend is still underway -- many people in England say 'You is', not ''You are'. Other versions of English say 'I is'. There is the famous song "Is you Is...Is you Aint my Baby". Ungrammatical, but great.

In time, I suspect we will all say I is, you is, he is, we is etc. Good thing too. Perhaps President Bush will be seen as a linguistic pioneer.

Yes, simplification is a natural process.Bush is a real linguist.

That is explained in George Orwell's novel 1984. It is called newspeak. A prophetic book indeed!.

¡Salud!

yes, they do, but in an informal speech.

Should a president's public speech be considered " informal" ?

This is a matter of style.
