Backup system Автор темы: Jean-Christophe Duc

Hi,
I am looking for a solution to backup data daily.
So far I was using an external drive, but it is very cumbersome, and we are sometimes two or three needing backup, which means there are many days when there are no backups at all.
What solution do you use/recommend? | | | Samuel Murray Нидерланды Local time: 16:55 Член ProZ.com c 2006 английский => африкаанс + ... Get three external hard drives | Dec 17, 2024 |

I have a desktop computer, and I use an external hard drive that is plugged in via USB, and the hard drive is attached to the case with sticky tape, and it's permanently plugged in. Then, I use Macrium Reflect. | | | Luca Tutino Италия Член ProZ.com c 2002 английский => итальянский + ... What is your current backup setup? | Dec 18, 2024 |

On my Win10 system, I am currently using:
- a single bootable system image on a disconnected external USB,
- a macro that saves a copy of my frequently updated all-purpose xlsx upon request and when specific data changes,
- occasional manual backup of most crucial current files.
I wanted to create images every few weeks and keep them disconnected on a separate USB drive. Eventually, I considered this system not entirely sure (because of possible delayed trojan activation) and abandoned it.
I also have a USB driver taped to my desktop case and always connected. However, I could never find a good backup solution. For years, I have tried some (Acronis, EaseUS, and others), but I always stopped the automatic backup after a while because of complications and eventually forgot even what system I had installed.
I am curious about Macrium. Could you share more about your backup configuration, e.g.:
- have you used it for an extended period?
- what methods do you use, full, incremental, system, image...?
- how frequently do they fire up?
- does Macrium include backup (auto) verification, periodical or on-demand?
- do you need special software and/or a CD to recover one or more files or the entire system after a crash?
- LBNL do you need to pay (€50/y) or just use the free version?
You know that joke when God said to Noah: make backup, I'm gonna do formatting.

I've been using the paid version for about 2-3 years now.
It used to be possible to use the free version to do full backups only, but they've changed their pricing structure and I believe they no longer have a free version. So, I had installed the free version on my wife's laptop and just created a full backup every two weeks onto an external hard drive while the dishwasher was working (joke, sorry). It took a while but it was actually faster than one might expect.
For my own computer, I use the paid version and I made an image backup of each of my drives. The image backs up everything, and you can browse the image by mounting it, and you can restore your computer easily onto a new hard drive in an emergency or when you buy a bigger hard drive (which I have done).
I set the backup schedule to the default, which is full once a month, differential once a week, and incremental once a day at 9 AM. You can also open Macrium, right-click a scheduled backup, and then run it immediately (or again). E.g. if I've recently made dramatic changes to my drive (e.g. deleted a bunch of movies), I re-run the full backup on demand without waiting for the end of the month.
One thing I really dislike about Macrium is that it doesn't tell you if a backup had failed. Sure, you can see that there had been an error in the program itself, if you go to the list of backups, but I would want the program to tell me immediately when a backup fails. There were times when I discovered after a few weeks that while backup tasks successfully started, they never successfully finished. When I discover that, I create a new backup from scratch using the image backup, and then hope for the best. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Backup system Anycount & Translation Office 3000 | Translation Office 3000
