What is the Trump factor? His name, sounding like a fist's solid thwack against an opponent's jaw, carries echoes of deeper processes under way not only in American society, but throughout the Western world. Trump is a protest against bureaucracy, while also being a revolt by slackers who want freebies to keep on coming, as well as a revolt by workers against the slackers. It's a protest against the growing complexity of society, which has become too complicated for voters to figure out how their votes will impact their own lives.
Trump is a signal to the Western world – primarily the U.S. – that some changes are required in the fine-tunings of democracy that enable a society to meet the challenges of a changeable world. Russian politicians and most Russian citizens want Trump to win, based on the hope that once this dashing hero gets into power, he'll destroy America – thus fulfilling the long-time dream of many Russian idiots. But the America-phobes would be best advised to keep calm and not get their hopes up about Trump. First of all, he probably won't become president of the U.S. Second, even if he does, the unpredictable outcomes of the democratic process have led the American government and (more importantly) American society to develop multilayered idiot-proofing. Unfortunately, Russia's structure lacks any such mechanism.

In May, the city [of Sochi in southern Russia] will also become the capital of Russia's "pivot to the east." The president is receiving Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe today. And though no one expects a breakthrough, the fact of this meeting is important in itself: it's the first meeting since the war in Ukraine started and sanctions were imposed. Then, on 19-20 May, ASEAN leaders will gather in Sochi for the organization's third meeting with Russia (the first was in 2005, the second in 2010).
What the two meetings have in common is that Moscow is seeking an Asian alternative to the one and only partner with whom the pivot has made any progress at all: China. And here the ASEAN-related hopes are particularly significant (Japan, after all, is a U.S. ally, and its prime minister has disobeyed Barack Obama by going to Sochi, but whether he'd dare to be such a freethinker with Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump is another question). ASEAN's population is half that of China, with a total GDP of close to $8 trillion. In terms of development, it's where China was a decade ago. This makes it a big market for Russian products, though so far ASEAN's share of Russia's exports is no higher than 2%. Russian business can boast of some achievements in these markets – especially in Vietnam, where we sell arms, build nuclear power plants, and extract oil, while Google's local rival is written by Russian programmers.

A significant part of the American public still sees Donald Trump as an unelectable clown. Consequently, victory for the candidate who, for all her faults, is nevertheless seen as a serious and substantial politician – Hillary Clinton – becomes almost inevitable...
Yes, Hillary is actively disliked in America. But Trump is feared. He's regarded as an unpredictable poser who could tip the country into an abyss of terrible trouble. When they're basically left with no other options, American voters will probably vote for the "lesser evil" in the person of Hillary Clinton.
What does this mean for Russia? Nothing good, I'm sure. The current U.S. leader, Barack Obama, doesn't really care about our country – or anything else, actually. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, does indeed feel strongly about Russia – and her feelings are mostly negative.
It's whispered in Moscow's diplomatic circles that Hillary is nursing a personal feminine grudge against both Vladimir Putin and [Russian Foreign Minister] Sergey Lavrov. The details of this grudge are unknown, but Hillary clearly failed to establish good relations with our leaders while serving as U.S. Secretary of State.

Ezhednevnyi Zhurnal, November 13, 2008
There was this show. In our country it screened as an epic documentary series, The Great Patriotic War; but the American original, narrated by Burt Lancaster, was actually called The Unknown War. So this war that’s everything to us - the greatest event in our history, the cornerstone of patriotism and pride, of remembering our forefathers and honoring our heroes, our epic and the code to our identity... for "them" it was "unknown." That’s just how things were.
Yet we have an Unknown War as well. Its anniversary is being marked worldwide; in Europe, on a grand scale. Russia has confined itself to a couple of news items and a modest wall plaque at Tsarskoe Selo, the old imperial residence outside St. Petersburg.
Ninety years ago, the First World War came to an end. An unknown war – and not a very interesting one, as far as we’re concerned. What do we know of it? Some of us have read Remarque, some have read Sholokhov. There’s a rhyme that goes: "In the German war, only cannon are worth anything." It was "German," but the Soviet era usually called it the "imperialist" war: valued only inasmuch as it “hastened the Great October Revolution."
And we’re still clueless about who took part in it or why, and who won, and which side Russia was on. Because our country’s sole reminders of the First World War are the (new) plaque at Tsarskoe Selo, the obelisk in Moscow’s Sokol park, and two or three other memorials. You won't find any lists of the fallen; you’ll never hear them spoken of as heroes. Back in Soviet times, we did hear a bit about the Brusilov Breakthrough - but only because General Brusilov joined the Soviet side later.
