In my language combination I am somewhat surprised by the number of low-paid jobs promoted on PROZ. Should I be in a position to contract out work I would certainly be offering twice the rate for a decent translator. Your thoughts?

Hi David,
For starters, may I suggest to search the forums for similar discussions...

Should I be in a position to contract out work I would certainly be offering twice the rate for a decent translator.

And outsourcers do - what you're not seeing are those jobs placed directly by contacting translators through their profile.

Best regards,
Ralf

Other people see low rates as part of the normal commercial cut and thrust, as buyers and sellers negotiate their way to mutual agreement on price.

Other freelance marketplaces (music, photography, journalism, art and similar genteel professions) show the same pattern

Other freelance marketplaces (music, photography, journalism, art and similar genteel professions) show the same pattern -- a wide range of prices. Why should translation be any different?

The best reaction to low-priced jobs is to ignore them. Let market forces rule. Fortunately, Swedish to English rates are generally well above average, so you have chosen well.
