Fascinating Nov 7, 2007

It's still fascinating but I also translate social related fields to help people who can not pay a translation. I've learned a lot in these other fields.

Would like to try something else Nov 7, 2007

I have been working as a translator for the last 12 years, I also teach translation but would like to start a conversion to interpretation. A different pace, different approach, a chance to meet new people coming from various fields more frequently....

Fortunately/unfortunately the contents of my fields constantly update... Nov 7, 2007

New technology and new techniques in car manufacture, repair and materials keep my learning curve steep in that area. My academic customers keep on researching so it's always new stuff (if it's rehashed I tell them so!). And similar stories for my other specialities.

So although I'm working in the same area I certainly don't have any chance of getting bored (or of making too much use of electronic memories for that matter...). More a case of constant stimulation thank goodness, alth

My first novel Nov 7, 2007

My freelance work, over more than 40 years, has all been technical and commercial. But now I am working on a novel, a thriller with political and religious aspects, a bit like "The Da Vinci Code". I am enjoying it. My knowledge of conversational Russian, Russian slang, Russian 16th-century history, the Orthodox Church and contemporary political movements will all be enhanced by the time I have finished it.

I'm kept on my toes by new inventions Nov 7, 2007

Since I translate in the field of intellectual property, I am forever finding out what the latest technology consists of, or, in fact, what the latest is in anything that there might be a market for. As I seldom read a newspaper, it is an excellent way to keep up to date with the world.

Fascination of a Lifetime Nov 7, 2007

Since I discovered the intellectual delights of translation back in 1963 - almost half a century ago - I never get bored. Even if there is nothing to do, even when I am on "vacation". The fascination with translation seems to be my lifetime occupation. Translation, to me, is not only work but also the practice of a hobby. I get my kick when I'm faced with an unfamiliar word or an arcane idiom or an unusual turn of phrase.

I get my kick when I'm faced with an unfamiliar word or an arcane idiom or an unusual turn of phrase.

I am due to retire shortly. But I don't plan on an idle retirement. I plan to continue working as a freelance translator not only to earn money but also to continue getting fascinated with linguistic delights that are more delicious than their Turkish namesake.

Life without translation, it seems to me, is a very dull life.

Other Nov 8, 2007

I was tempted to choose "it's still fascinating", but I've been steadily working in the same field(s) for 4, almost 5, years, and I hardly think that qualifies as "many years"

Therefore, I chose "other".

(though I'm pretty sure that if you asked the same question in another 5 years, I'd still be fascinated with my chosen fields)

Actually, most of the above Nov 8, 2007

It really depends on the contents of the document - I work mostly in the automotive/tech field and I'm getting slightly bored with IFUs and overhaul manuals. It's after three months of continuous inflow of "how-tos" and "when-tos" that I start considering selling all my PCs, CATs and other pets, and moving to Australia to grow grape vines...
However, when it's "new model" time I still get all bouncy and giggly like a schoolgirl on a first date, and wouldn't change my job for anything in th
