No, not any more Oct 20, 2017

Over 10 years (2006-2016), I traveled a lot (at least once a month) between Brussels and Lisbon for family reasons, but I “sedentarized” last year when I decided to move back to Portugal, after 30 years in Belgium.

Same here, I use new technologies for my work, but tend to only move from my home office (desk top computer) to my recliner (laptop) when I need a change of pace.

As far as I'm concerned, if I'm not at home, I'm out of the office and so have no need or desire to be constantly connected to work. I've "got a life" as they say.

Sometimes Oct 20, 2017

I normally work at my little workstation at home, with a desktop PC.

However, sometimes I need to travel for extended periods of time. For example, my parents, both 86 now, appreciate it when I am able to fly home and spend more time with them, and translation lets me keep working when I do. I can wake up at 3:30 AM (my body still being on Central European Time), work undisturbed until mid-morning, and then spend the rest of the day with my family. Win-win.

I also appreciate being able to do work on long flights and train rides, and make use of the time.

That's the name of my social profiles! Oct 20, 2017

I laughed when seeing your question (Poll: Do you consider yourself a "digital nomad'?), and I see some colleagues interpret it differently.

My social profiles have recently been updated to include the term "digital nomad", since what I consider freelance translation to be is a tool to decide *whether* you want to work in one place or another. I have worked from several locations in Spain (including the car and cafes, a motor home, and my different homes over the years), in USA (whi

My social profiles have recently been updated to include the term "digital nomad", since what I consider freelance translation to be is a tool to decide *whether* you want to work in one place or another. I have worked from several locations in Spain (including the car and cafes, a motor home, and my different homes over the years), in USA (while going to University), and Sweden. For nearly 18 years, I have been a "free bird". But I must say the most comfortable is my own desk at home, with my diffuser, my special chair, my special split keyboard, etc. The option to decide to work from home in my pajamas is a key concept for me of the freedom that "nomadic" life implies.

And that freedom has allowed me to pursue other passions as a side, now especially essential oils and how to live a healthier life with natural means. I love inspiring and helping others.

So YES! I love working from home, and I love knowing I can take my laptop and work elsewhere exactly when I want to.
Yay freedom!!!

I will be soon. Oct 20, 2017

I answered "yes" to this question because my journey will launch in about 2-3 months (speaking of which, I need to buy a plane ticket!). I plan to go to New Zealand and live, work and explore there for several months and spend the next year traveling around Oceania and Asia. Afterward, I plan on going to Germany to get another degree and set up some kind of home base in Europe, but we will see if this nomad lifestyle sticks. I have this wild dream to visit every country in the world, but if that is too ambitious and/or dangerous, then I will at least visit every continent (having already lived on three). Travel is my passion in life.

Hats off to all the wanderers/traveling translators/interpreters out there!

I will follow you so I can hear about how you make it work with traveling and translation, as I plan to launch my own journey in a couple months. Best of luck and keep enjoying the freedom we have as freelancers!

A what? Oct 20, 2017

I had to Google the term to make sure I knew what it meant.
According to Wikipedia: "Digital nomads are people who use telecommunications technologies to earn a living... Digital nomads use wireless internet,...", and by that definition yes, I suppose I am. However, I don't use any cloud-based applications if I can help it, and I only use Internet cafes/co-working spaces and the like when I have to.
I do tend to keep working when travelling or on "holiday" though... although I'm th

I do tend to keep working when travelling or on "holiday" though... although I'm thinking about taking a whole two weeks off next year.

I didn't know what it meant (and I still don't), but unless I'm sleeping I'm almost always sitting in my office in front of the same computer.

Not a digital nomad or any other type of nomad. I do want to move away from the big city to a healthier place, and I'm only waiting for my wife to finish her degree in Law. But I don't think that will make me a nomad either.
