A book... Feb 4, 2009

So far, I have translated one book and would love to translate more.

In fact, I am currently actively looking for more books to translate, getting in touch with authors and publishers but it's proven to be quite a difficult area to get into!

Film Feb 4, 2009

I've already done the dialogues for two or three documentaries and one feature film. It would be nice to do a "real" film, but it would be better to collaborate with at least one other person so that we can check whether things sound right!

I've done them all at least once.... Feb 4, 2009

But I'd love to do more films, books, poems and songs! Those are my absolute favorites, and are what I feel I do best, since I have a good grasp of colloquial language, slang, etc., and I am also a writer, poet and lyricist myself.

I'd like to translate films Feb 4, 2009

In almost 16 years in the business, I have translated many websites, some books, a few poems and songs, but no film. I realize that film translating is very different from translating a text with no spoken form and that it has some technical peculiarities. But I think the challenge would be thrilling. I don't even care if it is a documentary, a feature film or a TV program.

By the way, those interested in an informal practice in subtitle translation can get a good start using (non-professional) websites like:

Traumnovelle, better known in its movieversion as Eyes Whide Shut and other light erotic material. But I guess that book has already been translated into many languages.

I understand we have to choose from something we haven't translated yet Feb 4, 2009

I chose "none". I have no desire to translate a book, poem, film or song. I could not choose "web site", as the question specifically asked us to choose from something we have not translated to date. I have a web site in the queue at the moment, and I translate them fairly regularly. My favourite thing to translate, in the end, however, is actually a Court Judgment.

I've done them all Feb 4, 2009

Especially films, hundreds of them... I virtually got sick of it.
Perhaps what I like the most now are user manuals about trucks, motorcycles and the like

I agree. I'm happy in my niche (pharmaceuticals) and have worked at it non-stop for 10 years.

I might like to take on a film (I've translated the other three items) but only if there was no rush and I could take my time.

I'd also like to translate a film, especially when I hear/see the howlers that appear in some dubbings/subtitles.

Any poetry that I have translated has always turned out to be a real headache, taking more time than it was worth in the end, although it's nice to see your name in the credits....

It's not about genres Feb 4, 2009

Over the years, I've translated shedloads of stuff in all of these categories, with the possible exception of film, which I haven't had all that much to do with.

To be honest, I have enjoyed - and hated - translations in each and every one of them. At the end of the day, the fun jobs always involved well-written texts with something cogent to say, regardless of the subject.

Marketing copy is perhaps the most variable in quality: much of it is "aria fritta" (hot air), as

Marketing copy is perhaps the most variable in quality: much of it is "aria fritta" (hot air), as they say in Italian, but really good advertising texts are a challenge and a great source of satisfaction when you get them right.

It's definitely not a question of genre, though. What makes a translation intellectually gratifying is the quality of the writing in the source language.

A complete book, of course!!!!! Feb 4, 2009

I would love to translate a complete book!!! Recently, I contributed translating some chapters for a book that was going to be published (I don't know if it was published or will be... some day...).

I also translated some chapters from “Reviving Ophelia: saving the selves of adolescent girls” for my graduation project (a few years ago). I enjoyed so much translating from that book!!!! It was a big challenge that forced me to be very creative!! I feel that I am good in this!... See more

I have also translated education manuals and chapters from books that will be used as teaching materials. I enjoy that very much as well. Anything in academic translation makes me happy!

I guess that translating an entire book instead of working just some chapters gives you the chance to put your own style and keep a consistent line thought the book. It gives you the chance to shape it from beginning to end... and that has to be great!!!!
