Have the following problem with my German version of Word 2002:
when I open a new document using the white icon in the upper left hand corner "Neues leeres Dokument", the new document is formatted in landscape (horizontally).
I have since completely de/reinstalled Word but to no avail.
First thought this problem could be eliminated by deleting "normal.dot", but can't seem to find it on my Windows7 Pro.
TIA for any suggestions.

right click on file and select "open saved directory" (or alike);

@Albert and Wolf Mar 21, 2012

Thanks for your input.
Unfortunately, neither Windows explorer nor the Windows7 search feature can any file named "normal.dot", so it must be somehow invisible to my searches?
According to information I've found on the internet, the normal.dot file should be located under
C:user/application data/Microsoft/forms
which in my case contains only "WINWORD.box".

Alter explorer configuration . Mar 21, 2012

Sometimes Explorer hides paths and files.

So, open Windows Explorer / Tools / Path Tools .

Open 2nd. tab, between General and Search.

Go to Advanced configuration and unmark "Hide files " or something alike.

you just click on "file" and "page setup" (don´t know what it´s called in the German version), and there you can select either "portrait" or "landscape" format.

Hope this helps.

but it reverts back to landscape the next time you create a new file.

Even Mar 21, 2012

if you select portrait and then click on default setting?

That´s weird indeed.

My templates Mar 21, 2012

In Word 2010 the 'normal' blank document is in 'File - new - my templates' and I think that's where it has always been (these files may be hidden files). You can modify it and save it as a template under another name. Then you can open Word again, go back to my templates, right-click on the old version and and delete it. Not sure if this will work in older versions of Word but you can try it.

Backslashes in forums Mar 22, 2012

Backslashes can be used in forum posts: I just copied your line with backslashes and substituted the backslash character where appropriate.
