I hope somebody can tell me what is the difference between these two office suits. I see Oracle's logo at OpenOffice.org page but I am interested in short and clear answers. Is OpenOffice.org a dead project after almost 20 years and what do people use now, OpenOffice or LibreOffice. And if there any CafeTran users here, can they use LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice for spell-checking and external editing? Selcuk | | | QUOI китайский => английский + ... Since Oracle acquired OpenOffice when it bought Sun, not much development has been put into the project. Some time ago, about 30 major OpenOffice contributors left the project to set up the Document Foundation which brings LibreOffice. Oracle recently gave away OpenOffice to the Apache Foundation. It is safe to say that OpenOffice is dead for the time being. | | | esperantisto Local time: 03:31 Член ProZ.com c 2006 английский => русский + ... ЛОКАЛИЗАТОР САЙТА
Selcuk Akyuz wrote: Is OpenOffice.org a dead project Not officially, but the last build is dated to February, if I’m not mistaken. what do people use now, OpenOffice or LibreOffice. Depends. Many Linux distros switched to LibreOffice or to GoOOo (the predecessor of LibreOffice) some time ago. I switched to LO from its version 3.4.2. And if there any CafeTran users here, can they use LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice for spell-checking and external editing? Not sure about CafeTran, but FineReader, for example, sees no difference. When you send OCR results to StarWriter, LibreOffice opens happily. | | | Selcuk Akyuz Турция Local time: 03:31 английский => турецкий + ... Автор темы
Now it is clear for me. I have been using LibreOffice for the last two months and in my limited experience I can say that it is more reliable than OpenOffice.org when editing large files, in particular with Calc.

My experience is quite opposite: even with 3.4.2 LO performs a bit less stable as OOo, and the 3.x branch of LO was barely usable at all. But it’s newer, it’s in development. Thus, it’s future.
agree with you, esperantisto. and to add that just that "load LO on system startup" consumes 90 Mb of RAM, while with OOo it took 12 Mb. on My LO 3.4 "Find" i.e. Control + Find, does not work (Windows 7). On Mac it is okay. Let us hope for the better. All these are minor issues and things will improve. The programmers will be /almost/ the same, but we will be always the same ones, so LO is guaranteed to stay. esperantisto wrote: My experience is quite opposite: even with 3.4.2 LO performs a bit less stable as OOo, and the 3.x branch of LO was barely usable at all. Yes, they can. You need to connect to LibreOffice the same way as to OpenOffice. Just point to the LibreOffice installation folder in CafeTran options (menu Edit | Options | Connection to) Selcuk Akyuz wrote: And if there any CafeTran users here, can they use LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice for spell-checking and external editing? LO has now two separate things: Find (a small toolbar appearing in the window bottom, which is called up by Ctrl+F) and Find & Replace (ol’ good dialog). I’ve reassigned Ctrl+F to the F&R dialog and am happy

I have found both OpenOffice and LibreOffice to be lacking for my taste. Personally, alongside MS Office I have installed Lotus Symphony 3.0, which is based on OpenOffice, but which is much more polished, pleasant and intuitive to use. | | | Selcuk Akyuz Турция Local time: 03:31 английский => турецкий + ... Thanks Igor, I think it will be better if this is reflected in the online handbook. Igor Kmitowski wrote: Yes, they can. You need to connect to LibreOffice the same way as to OpenOffice. Selcuk It is good to see that there are so many LO users here although I couldn't find a comparison of Open/LibreOffice in the forum search. Personally, alongside MS Office I have installed Lotus Symphony 3.0, which is based on OpenOffice, but which is much more polished, pleasant and intuitive to use. So I installed Lotus Symphony, but have run into one serious issue: Maximum number of rows! I work with very large glossaries, and so this is a deal-breaker. The reason I am dissatisfied with Excel is its pathetic lack of UTF-8 support, so I have tried openoffice, and libreoffice, and now Lotus. So far I am not all too happy with any of them. Someone has yet to develop a good program for editing VERY LARGE comma or tab separated glossary files. Michael | | | Selcuk Akyuz Турция Local time: 03:31 английский => турецкий + ... Автор темы
Please correct me if I am mistaken, doesn't Excel 2007 support UTF-8? Selcuk
