I won't attempt to land a marketing coup by doing this, my aim is rather to fight prejudice and to free myself from the lie that "I am like everybody else" (aka neurotypical).

From very early years on, I noticed that I seemed to be always off-key with the rest of the world and that I was pursuing my own interests and ideas in a rather persistent if not stubborn way.

This allowed me to learn much more than average people in certain areas, while completely blacking-out some other ones.

I am also able to stay focused on a task for hours on end without interruption and will not give up anything easily when started, although getting started may prove to be difficult at times.

On the negative side, I am subject to long depressive episodes and may show (very) uncommon behaviours.

And contrary to what can be read here and there, the Asperger syndrome is not curable - you cannot be cured from your genetic heritage.

I am very well aware of the consequences and effects that my post may have on future jobs and on the way potential and current clients/customers will look at me.

However I felt that making my condition public was the only way to get me out of my current depressive state.

I am really relieved.

Thanks for reading,
Laurent J Krauland

I was a little worried, I must admit Jul 5, 2012

Hello Laurent,
I must admit, I was a little worried that something bad has happened to you, because you weren't around much recently. Well, at least I now have a slight clue about what may have been the reason for your absence, and it's a relief to know that you are alive and, hopefully, well.

I am very well aware of the consequences and effects that my post may have on future jobs and on the way potential and current clients/customers will look at me.

I could hardly believe that your clients or peers will judge upon this very post, but rather upon your past work and actions.

Laurent, I'm not an ar*e licker, but I want you to know that I have always looked up to you as my mentor. Whether or not I've been a good student, that's another thing. I've learned a lot from you and your contributions on ProZ and at the "cafe" (BTW, I don't think I'm the only one), and that's the only thing I can base my very own judgements on.

Thank you so very much, Laurent!

You're perfectly normal, it seems to me.

All I care about... Jul 6, 2012

I could not tell about your customers, but to me you have always been one of the people with a finest insight about our profession and life in general, and a very clear mind as well. That is all what I care about, and am sure your customers have the same opinion.

Just like me Jul 6, 2012

Laurent, from your description, you sound just like me. I guess I must be an "aspie" too. Maybe that's been my problem all along! Like Tom, I think you sound perfectly normal (because just like me!).
Best wishes,
Jenny

Be who you are Jul 6, 2012

I agree with Tomas - I can't speak for your actual work but your presence and thoughtful participation in the forum point to a capable and skilled translator and professional as well as an insightful person in general.
I hope that this forum may continue to be a useful communication means for you, even at times when face-to-face interactions may seem too overwhelming.

The stigmas around Asperger's will continue to fade and even more so when those affected stand up and put a face to the "condition." I think you're an excellent example of someone turning the strengths associated with Asperger'sinto an advantage in your profession, and I'm sure you can be inspiration to others.
Kudoz to you (pun intended?) for being who you are and taking steps to pull yourself through a difficult period!

As she also wrote "I think you sound perfectly normal".

nowadays many people think that they have some kind of special illness,
this is the new "cool", and has become mainstream since Abed in "Community"
or Sheldon Cooper in the "Big Bang Theory" or the Rain Man, etc.
More and more people are overweight, and I am also certain that
the sales the Vicodine went up only because of Dr House.
Random examples, and I mean that we do follow other people and worry too much.
Unfortunately it has become perfectly okay to not be physically fit and many people
distinguish themselves with imaginary OCDs, etc.

Being depressed, and having quirky habits (or being socially awkward) does not make you an aspie,
it makes you like every third person (not a real statistic).

So my question to OP is: have you really been diagnosed by a specialist (in which case I do
apologise for my doubts), or even did s/he prescribe you any medication, or
anything like that?

I guess my post might not be very popular after all the other consoling messages but I've had my
fair share of meeting people with self-diagnosed illnesses and hypochondriacs.
This big proclamation on the forum makes me doubt...

EDIT: oops, grammatical mistakes, sorry, I was not paying attention...
