Since a while a notice has been popping up on my PC wanting me that the AVG free edition would expire from December 1st. All it's functions seems to continue working, but I've also read on the Internet that the free AVG version 8.5 would not be available for download anymore. Have you heard anything about it? If I've been using it before this expiration date, will I be able to continue using it? Will it still maintain the same security level?

Kind regards,

So that's why they keep buggering me with these popups :) Dec 4, 2009

I understand that the problem regards mainly new users who cannot download free version but as everyone needs to reinstall OS from time to time we'll all have this problem.

I think that in this situation I would choose Microsoft Security Essentials - it has decent reviews for a free software (http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ )

Hello;
You can go for Avira http://www.free-av.com/ or Avast http://www.avast.com/.

Also, you can use Calmwin as it's an open source software:

http://www.clamwin.com/

* High detection rates for viruses and spyware;
* Scanning Scheduler;
* Automatic downloads of regularly updated Virus Database.
* Standalone virus scanner and right-click menu integration to Microsoft Windows Explorer;
* Addin to Microsoft Outlook to remove virus-infected attachments automatically.

Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.

Tamer

AVG is still free - you downloaded the trial version of the paid variety Dec 4, 2009

Hi Karina,
Downloading the free version of AVG is a little tricky, as you are directed to the trial version first and you have to really know what you're doing.
Same story with AVG 8 and 8.5.
HTH,
Sandra

Hi Staphen,

Could you provide me with the right URL? I could not find it, and don't want to download the wrong one once more.

Thanks and regards,

Karina

Trial period Dec 4, 2009

I downloaded the trial version and was advised that I would be given the option to revert to the free version at the end of of the trial period.
How I am supposed to assess the value or the paid version, I really don't know as I am not aware of any difference!

AVG9 gave me blue screens Dec 5, 2009

It is quite normal for old versions of a freeware product to become unavailable when later versions become available.

I myself am happy that I have the 8.5 installer, because 9.0 gave me blue screens of death (several per hour) on my Windows XP machine. I then removed 9.0 and reinstalled 8.5, and it downloaded the latest files and it works fine again.

I wonder if it would be possible for someone to install 8.5 now, after 1 December, and still get the updates? I suppose the program would give an error message if itis not possible.

Hi Russell,
the differences between the versions are shown on the page for which Hynek gave a link. Assessing the plus points of paying versions is indeed another question...

AVG... Dec 5, 2009

AVG definitely still free, but definitely not the best option, usually slowing your machine down and often producing hoaxes. If you want to stick to free Czech antivirus, I suggest that you try Avast.
As regards commercial products, I'd prefer NOD32 or F-Secure.

AVG 9 Blue Screen Dec 5, 2009

To follow up on what Samuel Murray said, I, too, installed AVG 9 after having purged all other AV programs, and had the same problems: blue screen several times a week, telling me that something wasn't installed properly, but didn't say what. I also got several messages saying that certain files were infected with a Trojan virus, etc. In addition, I got redirected to totally unrelated sites when I clicked on a Google link. I also got several messages saying that certain files were infected with a Trojan virus, etc. In addition, I got redirected to totally unrelated sites when I clicked on a Google link. Since I hadn't installed anything else, I was just getting ready to send Grisoft an email, when all of a sudden, after about two weeks, everything was back to normal and working "comme il faut."

Have no idea what happened, but the program apparently healed itself. Would love to get an explanation from Grisoft.

I upgraded to the paid version of 9.0.710 some time back. It scans much quicker, seems to find more crap and deals with it.

It hardly costs a fortune (ca. £20 p.a.), does not interfere while you are working or try and dominate your computer performance like Norton does (or at least did).

That said, I also use two other small freeware programmes for malware/spyware every now and then at the recommendation of a geek friend. It's always interesting that they variou

AVG has always been highly spoken of in the forums. Do I want security or freebies?

I'll take the former please.

Cheers,

Good experience with Avira Dec 6, 2009

This summer I got some Trojans from USB flash memories which neither McAfee nor Kaspersky could heal, so I bought a special Anti-Trojan called Prevx, which did help. I was so happy that I bought the paid version of Avira, although the difference is only that the free version shows some ads.
