It can be useful if you're using a CAT tool that does not autocorrect straight apostrophes into curly ones. This is the case with Studio 2014 and older, memoQ and probably many other tools.

The same technique can be used to modify any other key (or combination of keys, eg. with Ctrl/Alt/Shift) on your keyboard, not just the apostrophe key.
