Source text - English The lack of year-round sources of water, high organic and mineral content of surface water, the remoteness of Arctic environments and logistical complications due to freezing climates make supply, treatment and distribution of drinking water a challenge in Northern latitudes. A decision-making process for selecting a given treatment and distribution technology should include evaluation of the raw water quality, the desired finished water quality, the amount of water needed over given time periods, the costs (in terms of capital, training and operational), available space, and environmental impacts. In the US Arctic surface waters are generally high in dissolved organic carbon and may have a high particulate load. Ground waters are generally high in minerals and are of limited availability. Several generalized treatment techniques currently exist (sand filtration, softening, ion exchange, oxidation (ozonation), and gas stripping). Each technique (or combination of techniques) has variable effectiveness under different situations. Complicating factors include storage of water after purification (will quality degrade over time) and removal/disposal of chemical treatments. The trend for US commercial facilities is to design smaller, modular treatment systems that can be rapidly deployed for treating water on-site. Как правило, арктические поверхностные воды на территории США отличаются высоким содержанием растворенного органического углерода и могут содержать твердые примеси.
