I am starting out as a freelancer and I have a limited budget.

I would like to know if I am to use WFA, and a client asks me to use their TM how do I import that into my program.

many thanks
from a newcomer to translation.

TMs supported by WFA Dec 5, 2014

WFA supports three kinds of TM's:

1) local TM's in the native Wordfast format (for instance, created by Wordfast Classic/Pro)

2) local TM's in the industry-standard TMX format

3) remote TM's hosted on a Wordfast Server (for instance, by companies/agencies that use Wordfast). For instructions, see this video

Depends on your client Dec 5, 2014

It depends on how your client wants you to use their TM. If they are prepared to send the TM to you in the TMX format (which virtually all tools support nowadays), you'll be able to use it in WFA.

If they want to keep the TM on their server and want you to access it remotely, you will need to use the tool that can talk to their server (eg. memoQ, SDL Trados Studio, Across, MemSource etc., depending on what they use). Unless they use Wordfast Server, in which case WFA can talk to it.

Did you upload it as a glossary, ie. via the following screen:

Looks like you've uploaded it via File > Upload document file, which is meant for the documents you wish to translate.

yes, just like that I have a glossary in word format, but can not understand why the 2 columns are then made into one.

Word vs. tab-delimited text Dec 5, 2014

You are talking about a file in the Word format. The instructions on the screenshot I took mentioned a tabulated text file. These are not the same. So the question is: did you save your Word file as plain text, prior to uploading it as a glossary in WFA?

Anyway, if you are new to WFA and CAT tools in general, you shouldn't start with uploading a glossary. Just upload a file you need to translate and start translating it. Very easy in Wordfast: all you need to know is press Alt+Down after each segment.

no.... just as a word format.

why not upload a glossary, this is meant to help you translate and speed up work load.

does the program build up the glossary as we translate documents?

If the tool tells you it wants a tab-delimited text file, and if I point this fact to you, why do you insist on feeding it with a Word file? Give it what it wants: a text file. You can obtain a text file from a Word document by saving it as plain text, it's as simple as that.

Sure, if you are able to follow the instructions and give the tool what it wants (in order to obtain a usable glossary). Again, WFA wants a tab-delimited text file, not a Word document.

No, what WFA (and all other CAT tools) builds up as you translate is a TM. What you can do regarding terminology is sending term pairs to the glossary as you translate, but this doesn't happen automatically: you need to tell WFA what the source and target terms are. Most other CAT tools work in the same way, the main difference is the keyboard shortcut you use to send selected terms to the glossary.

Thank you for that sound advice.

I must have overlooked or missed the part about the file type.

Will try and save my glossaries as text file and tab delimited and then see if it works.

I will also look at the part about sending the translated terms to the glossary.

many thanks

will try that.
