Hi Dominque:

I have installed Wordfast Classic version 6.13 on a XP microsoft PC with MS Word 2010 and I am trying to select a glossary but it shows me an error message warning to me the glossary I am trying to select, (.txt) format, is a TM and not a glossary.

So, what are the steps for selecting a glossary in Wordfast Classic?

Is there a tutorial video? or can you explain to me the steps I have to follow?

I've never been able to get the glossary function to work properly in WFC, although I've been using it in my own rudimentary way (i.e. without the glossary function) for a few years years now. So it will be interesting to see the solution here.

First, make sure it really is a glossary. Open it directly in MS Word. Is each entry preceded by a date? If so, then it is a TM.

If it is really a glossary, try this: tell WFC to create a new glossary, and then open that glossary in MS Word, and copy/paste your existing glossary at the bottom of the newly created glossary.

That's odd (or interesting) because I find WFC's glossary feature to be fairly straight-forward. What is it about the glossary feature that you haven't been able to get working?

Almost everything. For example, when I select the glossary I want to use, WF always seems to go back to the first one of the list by default. And I don't know how to get glossary terms to insert. However, I get by fine without the glossary function and don't have time today, or even this weekend, to start fiddling with it...

Hmm... can't help there. I don't quite understand.

Do you mean that when you add terms, it automatically selects the first one as the one to which the term is added? Hmm... if this does happen, it doesn't bother me, because I always add terms to the first glossary. I use the second and third glossaries only for reference.

And I don't know how to get glossary terms to insert.


To add terms to the glossary:
1. Select the source term, press Ctrl+Alt+T
2. Select the target term, press Ctrl+Alt+T
3. Edit the entry and optionally select to which glossary you want to add it.

To insert glossary items into the txt:
1. Select the highlighted term using Ctrl+Alt+leftarrow and rightarrow.
2. Press Ctrl+Alt+downarrow to insert it.
OR:
1. Type the first few letters of the source text of the glossary item.
2. Press Tab, and its translation will be inserted into the target field.

Hey Neilmac:

Yes, Samuel is right, if you follow the steps he describes, it should work.

Now I gonna try it one more time, 'cause yesterday I could select the glossary but I wasn't sure how to insert the terms into the target segment, MS Word started showing me an error message about macros are disable, but in fact, macros were enable in my PC, so 'til now I don't know how to fix this issue, when I get the answer, I'll tell you know.

Samuel, if you know how to insert terms from the 'SELECTED GLOSSARY', let know please.

Is there a video on youtube to figure it out this?

No, I already know how to create glossaries and add the items to them. The problem is that when I select one of the 4 client-specific glossaries I have created and want to work with it, it returns to the nº 1 glossary, which corresponds to another client. So, I am unable to insert any vocabulary items that are in the pertinent glossary to the text I'm translating. However, as I said earlier, I just press on regardless without it. It's not an important issue for me, but it would be nice to know where I am going wrong, or how to get the glossary I want to work with to stay selected instead of reverting to the nº 1.
I find the WF help and forums like this pretty helpful, but ideally, I would like to be able to ask someone how to do certain specific actions in WF without having to go over things I already know how to do.
PS: I'm not referring to your post, for which I'm grateful, but just things in general. Last week I forgot how to change the background colour of the text and was too embarrassed to ask anyone (I eventually found out by trial and error)...

That certainly is odd.

I have separate setup files (INI files) for each client, so when I start a translation I first select the INI file, and then the chosen glossaries are automaticaly loaded. I'm referring to Setup > Save setup as... (you can also select a setup file in that list).

I have also learnt that I should exit the WFC control panel after making every settings change, and not try to set more than one setting at a time, otherwise the setting sometimes does not stick and reverts to what it was beforehand.

Cheers for the explanation, Samuel. I had to look up how to do this again today. One of my main client's star products comes up so often that I decided to insert it in their glossary, but it's been so long since I used it, I'd forgotten the last part (T) of the Ctrl-alt+T step. I'd also forgotten the down arrow insertion key combo. It seems to be working fine now though, so thanks again for taking the time to help out.
