I'm translating from English to Norwegian, and for the first time with the help of Wordfast. I'm not impressed quite yet, as I'm a lot faster without the use of this program; some of the problem being I have no dicitonaries in the program. I installed Intelliwebsearch, but that's not helping as I might as well look up the pnline dictionary manually.
I mean, is it no help to get from this program if you haven't got a TM file already? And what about dictionaries, isn't it possible to... First of all, it is not clear which Wordfast you are talking about (Classic, Pro or Anywhere). Secondly, you seem to have misconceptions about what a CAT tool is and what it is not.
No, Wordfast won't make a word by word English into Norwegian translation for you, using your locally installed English-Norwegian dictionary. Anyway, you would get better results by using machine translation (eg. Google Translate and/or Microsoft Translator).

Building your TM is something Wordfast will do for you as you translate. This is true of any CAT tool. Building your terminology is something *you* need to do, for instance as you translate. Wordfast (and many other tools) have a function that lets you send term pairs to your glossaries on the fly, but it involves some work from you.
Using a CAT tool is not about instant reward: you will reap the benefits later on. The longer you use it, the greater the benefits will be. Or at least that's the idea. ▲ Collapse

Thanks for the reply, clears a few things up.
I just assumed that a tool like this not only would translate sentences that were similar or the same as sentences I had translated in the past, but that it also would recognize _parts_ of sentences and then translate them.

You can use the concordance search (called TM Lookup in Wordfast Pro, for some strange reason) feature for that purpose, either manually, or automatically.
What Wordfast Pro lacks is an "autoassemble" feature such as the one found in Déjà Vu, memoQ and a few other tools. "Autoassemble" is the Frankenstein approach to translation: one leg from a glossary, a head and an arm from the TM and the rest from the source. Some say it can give good results, I'm skeptical.

Would be awesome to have some kind of autosuggest function for single words in the program, like the kind you have on mobile phones. You start typing a word and suggestions pop up. Would be hard to implement either, it would work just like the TM function only for single words.
Maybe I have strange needs when it comes to making the translation job faster, but I would use this function for sure..

I use Google translate sometimes, and they actually get the sentence correct once every other year. It's however not possible to copy the text from Google translate and into Wordfast. Really practical.. Am I missing something?

Probably because your source language is Finnish, which glues everything together. Same for Turkish. Selçuk reports he only uses CAT for English > Turkish, not the other way around.
About CAT tools with auto-assembling: CafeTran (80 euros) does it too. It can also use subsegment levels, which the OP calls:

Wordfast Pro does have such a function:
It doesn't work exactly as predictive input in mobile phones, but it can be useful. The equivalent feature in Wordfast Classic (called AutoComplete) is more versatile, however.
If you want autosuggest dictionaries generated from TM's (yours or someone else's), you should have a look at SDL Trados Studio (AutoSuggest), Déjà Vu (AutoWrite) or memoQ (Muse).
