Hi everybody,
I need to translate a document that has a lot of formulas inserted with word, but when I try to open it in Wordfast it only makes segments before the first formula... It is really weird and I think Wordfast is not recognizing the formula, but I can't replace all the formulas with images, how can I get wordfast to recognize the formula, or if that's not possible, to ignore it but keep transcribing the rest of the document to segments so I can work on it?

just take them out Nov 1, 2012

the quickest solution
- make a copy of the document
- delete all the formulas from the copy
- translate the copy
- insert the formulas from the original, in the translated file (Copy/paste)

Dan

Thank you Nov 1, 2012

Thank you for your quick reply, I'll do that since I'm in hurry to start translating the document, although I would hope there was some way to make wordfast recognize formulas...

Formulas or fields? Classic or Pro? Nov 1, 2012

AFAIK, formulas in Word are only found in tables. They can be used to calculate the sum of values found in a column, or its average etc. Formulas normally don't need to be translated. So do you really mean formulas, or something else, like equations, or fields inside normal segments?

Secondly, which Wordfast do you refer to: Classic or Pro?

Equations Nov 1, 2012

Hi,
I'm sorry, I did use the term wrong. I mean equations (as in mathematical equations, inserted with word) and I'm using Wordfast Pro. Not all the equations on the document would need to be translated, but it would really be a lot of work for me to insert them again after the translation. There are also mathematical terms for means (ie, the X with a dash above it) interspersed throughout the text, and I already did a lot of format editing on this file...

Which kind of equation? Nov 1, 2012

Are they created with the Math component of Microsoft Office or something else? For the first case, if Wordfast Pro can’t help (I know no solution with this program), try converting the document to OpenDocument format using Apache OpenOffice/LibreOffice (with conversion of the equations) and translating with OmegaT.

eThe equations are created with Microsoft Word Nov 1, 2012

@esperantisto: Yes, the equations are created using the Math component on Microsoft Word. Thank you for the suggestion but the client requests specifically for the file to be on Word doc format, so I couldn't convert it to an open format...

Again, which kind Nov 1, 2012

How did they make them? I know at least two methods:
a) a Math object;
b) x with a combining macron or overlay above (such as x̄ or x̅).

And anyway, why are they a problem?

Convert back Nov 1, 2012

Well, convert it back to Word DOC after translation. You can actually also convert the file to DOCX and back to DOC using MS Word, but DOCX is a worse solution for OmegaT as it tends to have more inline formatting tags.

They have combining macrons and superscripts Nov 1, 2012

There are x̅ formulas, and other with superscripts.
The problem is that Wordfast only converted the document up to the point before there was an equation: ie, the first equation appeared on page 9 (it is a 92 page document) and the TXML only had 215 segments... I was sure that couldn't be right so I saved it as translated file and the resulting file only had 9 pages, and page 9 was not complete, text only appeared before the equation, and the equation didn't appear except for the first l

Found a solution by converting to DOC Nov 1, 2012

I found a solution for this, and I'm sharing it with you if you ever encounter this problem with wordfast:
1- Converted the file to DOC (it was DOCX), the equations were converted to images and Wordfast was able to complete the whole document.
2- To get rid of the problem of the bad quality and poor legibility of the equation images on the DOC file, I converted it back to DOCX and the equations reverted back to editable objects.

So that's what I'm going to do (use the DOC for the translation and then convert the translated file back to DOCX).

Thank you very much for your help!!
