I notice there is already a discussion about merging two TMs in Wordfast. But they are quite old (dating from 2003), and I see nothing in there about Wordfast Pro. For example, one submitter suggests:

"Open the TM editor, select tools, then select the special filters. There is a filter called 'merge the current TM with another TM.' Use this to merge your TMs."

I have Wordfast Pro, and looking at the above instruction, I would like to know how do I "open the TM editor."

I have searched the Web as well. No hits. So I merged the two TMs in Notepad following the very brief instructions on the Wordfast web site (essentially using one Header, and pasting the other TM contents at the end of the file).

It seems strange to me that Wordfast Pro has no menu item that will do this for the user in the programme. It seems odd that I must go outside the programme to accomplish this task.

Any help is appreciated.

Merge TMs Jan 14, 2012

Dear Dave,

I can suggest three ways for merging TMs and you can use the one better for you:

To merge TMs, you can use Wordfast Classic Data Editor. Even the demo version should work. However, I see that you can even license it. Just login before you download it and you will be able to get a licensed version.

Dear Dave,

I can suggest three ways for merging TMs and you can use the one better for you:

To merge TMs, you can use Wordfast Classic Data Editor. Even the demo version should work. However, I see that you can even license it. Just login before you download it and you will be able to get a licensed version.

You can download and install the latest version of Wordfast Classic available at:
http://www.wordfast.net/index.php?whichpage=downloadpage

It is an MS Word template (.dot). The ZIP file contains both Wordfast.dot and WFReadMe.doc including the instructions of installing. (Make sure you extract the ZIP file first and then follow the instructions in WFReadMe.doc).

You can open Wordfast Classic Data Editor by clicking the second right button on Wordfast Toolbar. Make sure you are on the TM tab and press Ctrl+O on your keyboard to open one of the TMs you want to merge.

After that, click on "Tools" button at the right top. You should see a dropdown list called "Special Filters".

Among them is “Merge current TM with another one" After selecting the filter and clicking OK, you can select the TM file which you want to add to the currently active TM. A message will appear asking you to click “Yes" you want to add the translation units of only the selected TM and to click “No" you would like to add all the translation memories in the same folder as the TM that you have just selected for merging. Whatever you select, another message will appear telling you about the number of translation units added at the end of the file and they are marked.

After that, you may need to delete repeated entries (e.g. those of the same source text). To do so, you can use the special filter "Mark redundant TUs" after which you can delete them using Ctrl+Z.

It is better usually to work on "copies" of your files.

Another way is to use Olifant; it is very easy. All what you need is to download it at:
http://okapi.sourceforge.net/applications.html

- Open one Wordfast txt TM
- File menu > Import
- Select the other TM (make sure you select "Wordfast TM" from the dropdown menu).
- The entries of the other TM will be added the currently open TM.
- File > Save as.

---

Another way is described at:

Opted for Olifant ... Jan 14, 2012

Yasmin ...

I did not go for Wordfast Classic because I do not use Word (one reason I use Wordfast Professional).

I opted for Olifant, and it seems to be working. We shall see.

Thanks for your generous and clear help.

All the best ...

Or just use the embedded TM Editor in Wordfast Pro Apr 14, 2015

I came here looking for instructions on how to merge local TMs in Wordfast Pro. Although this is an old post, it still has high rank in Google and, because it shows incomplete information, I'm adding the option available using the "TM Administration perspective" embedded editor in Wordfast Pro, which should be the first option to many people:

"To merge local TMs:

The Merge TM options appear.

Select one of the Merge TM options and click OK.
The two local TMs are merged and the confirmation message appears.

Note: Ensure that the source and target language codes of the both the local TMs to be merged match. If not the following error message appears."
