Hello everybody,
One customer of mine sends me a bunch of FrameMaker files for translation. The trouble is that they are not .mif files, but a .fm files because my customer uses version 9 of Frame Maker. He wants them back clean in the original version.
Those files are all contained in a book, which is full of many many many active crossreferences and markers. Some supplementary files included in the book and sent by the client are .doc and .xls and .pdf.

I understood that you can open .mif files with WordfastPro.
Personnaly, I could not open any .fm files in WordfastPro. So I decided to make a test on one file: I downloaded the old version of FrameMaker and tried to save a copy of the original .fm file in a .mif version. I then managed to open it. Doing so I got a message warning me I would be loosing some informations included in the file. Let's assume it did not loose anything, I then went to Wordfastpro and started translating. I finished the translating work and did not know how to get back to the clean translated document, which is what my customer wants...
So here my questions to you out there:
1) Can you open .fm files in WordfastPro?
2) Is there another way than changing the file into an .mif file? .pdf for instance? Am I really going to loose data?
3) Are the crossreferences and markers being automatically actualized or do I have to change them myself?
4) How do I get the cleaned up file when I am finished translating it? Do I have to save it again in another file format?
Have you ever see any informations on the net or post on that topic? I already spent a very long time searching, so any help from the FrameMaker professionals out there would be greatly appreciated.
One precision: I can work with something else that Wordfastpro.

Dear Caroline,
Exporting the MIF files is the job of the client, not the translator (unless you are a DTP expert, as well). For your information, you can have a look at this, especially Chapter 2:

As a translator, you need to download and install the latest version of Wordfast Professional available at:
http://www.wordfast.com/store_download.html
When you finish the translation of a MIF file in Wordfast Pro, you can save the target file as MIF again by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Save Translated File".

First let me tell you I am really really happy about what happened in you're country!
I got your message and managed to do what you said while I was searching myself this morning. I still have one question: I get very strangly positioned placeables in the WordfastPro file. How shall I interpret them?

Do you refer to the order of them? If so, do your best to keep the order, especially for opening and closing placeables. As for mid-placeables (those enclosing a word or two in a long segment while you need to change the order for syntactic/semantic purposes), just make sure you insert them all; if they affect the text format, this can be easily adjusted later in FrameMaker.

It is Ctrl+Alt+Ins.

I think I was not very clear myself: what I meant is that when you open the mif file in wordfastpro, you get on the left side of the screen many cells which do not need translation. They are just informations needed by FrameMaker in order to format the file properly. I assumed until now that I should cut and past them on the right side without changing them. To make all of this much easier and less time consuming, is there a way to recognize at once what is text, that is what needs translation and what is not? A color code, or something? I haven't found any information referring to this in the links you sent me or in the user's manual.

As for pars of text that you are quite sure they do not need to be translated, you do NOT need to copy them to the target; just leave them, and they will be automatically inserted when you "Save Translated File".

I got a MIF 9.0 file (for FrameMaker 2009), and then a MIF 7.0 file to translate. I did translate 4 segments in WF PRO and when I try to save the translated file, the following message appears:
Error while saving file:
org.gs4tr.editor.filters.commons.FilterException: Error while aligning mif file.
Could you please help?

I am absolutely no expert in this field but I often work on Frame Maker .mif files both 7.0 and 9.0 and have to deal with the same problems.
Here what I do : you open whatever file causes you a problem in Wordfast, do a test translation and see if it is working. If it is version 7.0 which does not work, you can save it in FrameMaker under file format 9.0. Or else, if it is version 9.0 which does not work, you open it and save it in FrameMaker under file format... See more Hi Ligia,

So at the end you only have file formats which are same (7.0 or 9.0, according to what was successful) and you can proceed to translation.
Also do not forget to enable the Frame Maker filter in your Translation Memory Preferences.
Make also sure you proceed to Transcheck before you save your file : using Frame Maker files, you have a lot of placeables and if you miss only a single one, nothing works !

The part of the Framemaker version I already did.
But the part you said that interested me a lot is the part: "Also do not forget to enable the Frame Maker filter in your Translation Memory Preferences." - well, I didn't. And do not know how (hehe).
Can you explain how we enable the frame maker filter in TM preferences?

You go into Wordfast menu and choose Preferences, then Translations, Filters anc check FrameMaker filters. Normally, the boxes are empty. Just check the boxes you need.

Ligia: what version of Wordfast Pro do you use? Make sure you have the latest 2.4.2, as the MIF filter has been constantly refined, as stated in the release notes:

As Dominique mentioned, please make sure you ***originally generate*** the TXML file in the latest version of WF Pro.
You say: "I did translate 4 segments in WF PRO...."
Please make sure you complete the translation before trying to Save Translated File. If you rather like to test that beforehand, use CopySourceToAll (Ctrl+Alt+Ins).
I do not expect you would have any problem with the latest version, but if you have any, please send me the source MIF + TXML + SKL.
