I need a little help or a lot as you may decide...
I am new to the world of CAT tools but have been prompted to consider taking one on , due to the potential of a new job. I am considering WOrdfast ass my Cat tools of choice to start me off after some research.
However before i do commit I wanted to ask you (and forgive my ignorance on this subject) a few questions.

However before i do commit I wanted to ask you (and forgive my ignorance on this subject) a few questions.
Basically my client has a website that requires translation. They say they can supply files in RSS and or XML format?
Does Wordfast accept and work well with either of these files without hassles and will they allow me to delivery translated files back in the either one or the other format? Any other suggestions on the best way to run this project an the steps one should take ... uploading files and creating glossaries etc ... would be appreciated.
Please advise on this and also is there a Wordfast trainer in the UK as there does not seem to be one on the Wordfast listings.
If someone could get back to me ASAP i would appreciated

I am using Wordfast Professional 2010. On the dropdown menu of file formats supported, I do not see RSS or XML. There is of course HTML.
It may well be that these formats are supported, but as I say I do not see them listed.

Although I'm not an active user of WF Pro, I would be really surprised if it couldn't work with XML. Forget about RSS.

Dear Jose and All,
Both Wordfast Classic and Wordfast Pro can translate XML files.
Wordfast Classic
After selecting your TM in Wordfast Classic, follow the following steps to translate the XML file.
- Right-click the xml file.
- Select "Open in" > MS Word
- Click Alt+Down or the first left button on Wordfast toolbar.
- A message appear asking you if you want to tag the file; click "OK".
- Now, you can start translation and move between segments using Alt+Down.
- You have to make sure you insert the included tags into the target cell using Ctrl+Alt+Right to select a tag and Ctrl+Alt+Down to insert it.
- When you finish the translation, click on the third right button on Wordfast toolbar, I.e. Quick Clean up.
- Wordfast will tell you that the XML file has been overwritten with your translation. Actually, when you get back to your XML file you will find it translated now.
Wordfast Pro
To open an XML file in WFP, you need first to have/create a rules (*.properties) file. Then, go to Edit menu > Preferences > Formats > New > Text-based Filter. Then, use the [...] button to browser for the "Conversion rules" (*.properties) file. Make sure the "Extension" textbox shows *.xml and save the settings (OK). You can change the filter name later. Now, you should be able to open the XML file in WFP (File menu > Open file).
This tutorial illustrates how to prepare a "conversion rules" (*.properties) file to translate XML files in Wordfast Pro:

A special thank you to you for your comprehensive answer. I have looked at your link and I can see it is pretty complicated for me as i may over 2000 files (although I would learn after the first 100 I am sure )
I wanted to ask you what would be the easiest formats to ask the client to deliver files to me ( to minimise rule writing etc) for Wordfast.

I am looking to jump on a few tutorials and also looking to consider someone for some one to one training.... to launch this project..... any suggestions welcome bu all and any that wish to chip in with something

Dear Jose,
It is all depends on how those files look like. Again, I am not sure if you are familiar with translating tagged/HTML files.
Sometimes, you have 2000 XML files, but you may need only one simple conversion rules file. In this case, Wordfast Pro will be better for you. The knowledge-base article includes a link to some examples that can show you the practical procedure.
Again, sending the files in HTML or Word format depends on their content and on who will work on those files after you translate them.
If you like, you can send me example files to have a look and advise you. But remember also that it is only your agency that can determine the work procedures; you may have options of course, but you have to ask and double check what they actually need.
