Hello folks,
Pardon me if this is meat and drink to all you technical wizards out there, but I am about to start a large (280-page) translation using Wordfast, and wondered if anyone has any tips (NB tips along the lines of "don't!" are not invited ). The reason I mention this is that the last time I had a fairly large (say 50-page) file to do with Wordfast it did get noticeably slower the further into the file I got. So wou... See more

Pardon me if this is meat and drink to all you technical wizards out there, but I am about to start a large (280-page) translation using Wordfast, and wondered if anyone has any tips (NB tips along the lines of "don't!" are not invited ). The reason I mention this is that the last time I had a fairly large (say 50-page) file to do with Wordfast it did get noticeably slower the further into the file I got. So would it be a good idea, for example, to split the file into several pieces before beginning, to avoid things grinding to a complete halt?

I think you could start in the original document and if you do find it slowing down, then think about spiitting it up.

The only time that I ever find wordfast slows down is in tables.

Sometimes to solve that I copy and paste the tables into another document, convert them to text and translate that. Then I go back to the original document and let autotranslate take me through the tables. The only problem with that is if there is any special formatting.

Do not use printview, the repagination takes much time each time you close and open a segment.
Split file.

Always split big files with WordFast. It's safe.

1. Save your file often, using Ctrl+S.
2. Reboot your computer every 10 pages.
3. Use "NeedForSpeed" in Wordfast if you want.
4. Select the entire text and set spellchecking to "none" before you start.
5. Every now and then, select all the text that you've translated so far, and set spellchecking to "none".
6. Resave your file under a new name every 10 pages, just in case.
7. If you can... split up the file into smaller files.
