@ Pablo

Sorry, apparently I was misinformed as the version I got of the event is obviously different ! I didn't mean to offend you or make any assumptions on what you believe or not. But when the event happened the echo I got about it was that nationals were making those demands...

I'm just curious about what the Spanish law states in the case of people who have been on Spanish soil (legally) about two or three years only and were part of this event (as I don't really understand on what grounds they can make such demands) !

cultural adaptation Aug 4, 2010

Anyone can adapt to the culture of anyone, regardless of who lives where. It's called loving thy neighbor. And I know of no religion that forbids that. Sorry if this has little to do with translation, but I just gotta sound off on this. A little love and humility can go a long way in any context.

I live in Mexico and I wai to my Thai friend up the street. She loves it.

And if they can't or won't accomodate you, you can probably accomodate them.

And that Christian screamer's behavior was anything but Christian. For that matter, is was probably anything but Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu or anything else, either, as far as I know.

I agree with you Werner

Well, I happen to disagree with the generalization inherent in the statement. For example, there are some cultures that I do not particularly respect, and I would not follow their strictures unless I felt threatened. I do not see adaptation under force as true adaptation (as, I suppose, is how the translator felt).

That having been said, I have a good idea which cultures those are, and since I have no desire to live in them (or to throw my lack of respect in their faces), I manage to avoid the issue handily by voluntarily not coming into contact with them.

Do some of us overgeneralize? Aug 4, 2010

A particular logistical challenge to being a female translator working in Saudi Arabia: there are no toilets for women in public buildings!

Would you ADAPT to THIS integral element of their culture? (The list can be easily extended…)

Going back to situations with claiming compensations from Westerners, it is possible to go further and claim other compensations, because those foreigners offer non-halal food, wear T-shirts in presence of Muslim people, do not provide breaks for salats/namazes (compulsory Muslim prayers five times a day) etc. etc. In several Muslim countries, I saw thousands and thousands of Muslim women – of different age and family status – shake hands with men and enjoy it. (Also, Benazir Bhutto shook hands with men; Fatima Bhutto (being a young unmarried woman) shook hands with men and still does)…

Shaking hands shows equality and is a sign of RESPECT, after all. This is something commonly accepted throughout the world -- just as toilets for women (see above for the alternative route).

I feel we shouldn’t overgeneralize. One functionary (not the most delicate man, perhaps) can be wrong. The humankind cannot.

I do not feel offended. Do not worry. For me Muslims are just as respectable as Christians or Buddhists or any people belonging to any other belief as long as they behave properly in the hosting country and in his own country. Despite being of Christian convictions, I think that many times some political or religious leaders have used religion to commit authentic atrocities misrepresenting the teachings that his leading figures have been releasing in the past.

As for the vandalism that took place in the cathedral of Barcelona, it was because they wanted "papers for all." Of course, I could not and do not consider all the Muslims alike due to a group of fanatics. But perhaps, if we were a bit more tolerant with the mistakes of others, understanding between peoples would be a little better.
