Dear Colleagues,
We have got information indicating that SDI Media is trying to use media translators in the other countries to make it faster and possible for less experienced translators to translate and subtitle films and television programs into Swedish.
The background is this:
Mediated negotiations between SDI Media Scandinavia and Teaterförbundet - Swedish Union for Theatre, Artists and Media - broke down June 12th.
The blockade of Teaterförbundet against the company – encompassing media translators who translate foreign films and subtitle both film and television -therefore went into effect Thursday June 13th (for further information on the conflict see enclosed press releases in English).
We have got the support we until now have asked for from Swedish sister unions and from the Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees.
For the moment we are collecting answers to be neutral from the SDI customers.
So far the greatest commercial TV channel (TV4) and the most famous moving pictures distributor (SF) have declared that they will not use any material from SDI Media Scandinavia until the conflict is settled.
So any information from you about what the Swedish Stenbeck-conglomerate, in which SDIs is part, are doing in the your country to avoid the effects of our blockade is important to us.
Best regards
Tomas Bolme
President

Contract negotiations: Blockade against Stenbeck company tomorrow
Mediated negotiations between SDI Media Scandinavia and the Swedish Teaterförbundet union for stage and media employees broke down this afternoon. Teaterförbundet\'s blockade against the company – encompassing media translators who translate foreign films and subtitle both film and television - will therefore go into effect at 8.00 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday.
\"The blockade is intended for both people who work for SDI Media Scandinavia and SDI\'s customers,\" states Jaan Kolk, union director of Teaterförbundet.
\"We assume that everyone involved, including the TV channels, will respect the blockade and avoid everything to do with translations covered by it.
\"This conflict is important to everyone who works on a project basis - as an employee or independent freelancer.\"
\"In all my years at Teaterförbundet,\" says union chairman Tomas Bolme, \"I\'ve never seen an attitude like this from an employer. It makes me think of the Swedish Commercial Employees\' Union and their long struggle for a contract with Toys R Us.\"
\"They never took the negotiations seriously,\" states Åsa Bjugård, the media translators\' representative at Teaterförbundet. \"SDI Media Scandinavia stood by its planned 30% pay cut on rates that haven\'t been raised for five years.
For an experienced translator, that\'s a cut of about SEK 5,000 per month.
\"In addition, the company refused to accept any contract that would also cover freelancers with registered businesses, which means that even if contract was signed, it would be worthless. SDI Media Scandinavia could simply demand that its freelancers must have a registered business in order to work for them.\"

PRESS RELEASE Stockholm, 13 June 2002
Teaterförbundet asks SDI\'s customers: Do you care about quality?
In a letter to SDI\'s customers today, Swedish union Teaterförbundet asks if they are concerned about the quality of the translations SDI provides.
SDI Media Scandinavia have implemented a 30% decrease on rates to translators - rates that have been in effect for over five years. To attain a reasonable monthly income, qualified translators will be forced to lower their ambitions and deliver translations with significantly reduced quality.
\"SDI are aware of this,\" says Ulf Mårtens, head of negotiations at Teaterförbundet, \"but their response is that their customers don\'t care about quality.\"
\"Now we\'re asking SDI\'s customers, including TV3, TV4 and Discovery, to confirm whether SDI is right in that statement,\" explains union chairman Tomas Bolme. \"At the same time, we want to exhort the television channels and SDI\'s other customers to respect our blockade against SDI Media Scandinavia and not use them for new translation assignments for the duration of the blockade.\"
This morning, a blockade was initiated against MTG company SDI Media Scandinavia, which provides translations and subtitles for film and television. During the blockade, Teaterförbundet\'s members will not accept any new translation assignments from SDI until the company indicates that it is prepared to participate in serious negotiations for a collective agreement for all of its translators.
Translators who are not members of Teaterförbundet are also encouraged to support the blockade.
