Here is a very nice solution to merge multiple PDF files into one big PDF, when you don't want to do this via the Preview app:

When you always save the combined PDF under the same name (e.g. reference.pdf) at the same location (e.g. the Desktop), you can have it opened automatically, whenever your CAT tool is launched:

Here's another approach, using the command-line utility PDFTK.

On Big Sur, this macro no longer works.

The good news is, that there now is a dedicated Quick Action:
