abandon her to her fate; leave her to her own devices

the 1st option is the well-known version I know.

However, if you're looking for something less dramatic, the 2nd option would fit the bill (ie, leave the poor girl to look after herself)

neutral Lisa McCarthy : Hi Carol - I think your first choice is good but the second has a different meaning. It's what came to my mind too but it means to leave someone to do as they please, but doesn´t imply a negative connotation as in the context given - i.e. being abandoned
