Thanks David- yes, I was just thinking the confidence thing is important. He is a villain, gloating about his giant army.
Thinking about it, in this situation we would normally use "smiled coldly". The author did not use 冷笑, but maybe he should have!
See my suggestion to express his mood of confidence, not angered by some one who probably said something prior to this sentence.
