When Abbot Pierre passed away earlier this year, the name of Emmaüs was ubiquitous in the media and on the streets. This is the name of the society he founded to help the pauper, after the name of a town where Jesus Christ is reported to have appeared to two disciples after his resurrection (Luke 24:13, 28-29).
There is another reality about this name that deserves a greater attention than it has received so far. Some nineteen centuries later, biblical Emmaus had evolved into a Palestinian town transliterated Imwas from Arabic, 10 miles/16 km south east of Jerusalem. Mostly Muslim, it was also home to a Christian community. However today, a recreational park stands in its place. Holiday makers and picnickers are invited to visit the ruins of Roman times but not a stone and not a sign remain of the town that used to be there only a few decades ago. Imwas has survived in the memory of the 13,000 people who claim to descend from its dwellers and now live in the West Bank and Jordan.
This peaceful town became a military target in June ’67 when war broke out between Israel and its Arab neighbours and ended in the conquest of the rest of Palestine. Based on Nobel Prize winner Yitzhak Rabin’s orders, armoured jeeps surrounded the town on June 7th 1967 and carried out the eviction of Imwas’ 2,000 inhabitants who were given a couple of hours to gather their belongings before to be cast on the roads to the refugee camps. About 15 people tried to go back and they are still missing 40 years after. Next the Israeli army dynamiters and bulldozers turned the town into rubble. Adding insult to injury, this place was later turned into “Canada Recreational Park” with financial sponsor from a Canadian millionaire.
The case of Imwas is the pattern and not the exception. The intention of this article is to outline its value as a symbol. It is estimated that there were more than 7 million Palestinian refugees and displaced persons at the beginning of 2003. This includes Palestinian refugees displaced in 1948 and registered for assistance with the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) (3.97 million); Palestinian refugees displaced in 1948 but not registered for assistance (1.54 million); Palestinian refugees displaced for the first time in 1967 (753,000); 1948 internally displaced Palestinians (274,000); and, 1967 internally displaced Palestinians (150,000).
Ethnic cleansing is piece and parcel of the Zionist project in Palestine. Zionism - the official ideology of the state of Israel – pursues the establishment and upholding of an alien Jewish majority and to turn the native Arabs into refugees afar or into a minority subdued through policies of apartheid.
The approach favoured by the Western media and establishment is that the conflict in Palestine is a fight between two equally-matched parties both in terms of legitimacy and force and that it is a dispute to be solved through negotiation alone. This has very little resemblance with realities. In political terms the conflict in Palestine clearly features an aggressor – the Zionist power – and a victim – the Arab Palestinian people, as was acknowledged by no less than David Ben Gurion, founder and first Prime Minister of the State of Israel .
This is very obvious in the case of Imwas and the thousands of Palestinian villages, towns and cities that underwent the same fate or who live at present under the same threat. We are talking here of people who were evicted from their homes at gunpoint or fled in the midst of war and who are not allowed to return because they belong to the wrong ethnic group . Any decent individual and any political party of democratic persuasion should be able to understand that such basic rights are not open to negotiation and they must have precedence over political considerations. They belong to the victims and no politician has the right to cancel them on their behalf.
Our rulers have paid lip service to the so-called peace process time and time again but they have proved no willingness to fulfil their duty to stand for justice. This is because advocating for the Palestinians’ rights would inevitably lead to a clash with USA/Israel.
It behoves then our civil societies to stand for justice in Palestine, to lead the way and pressure our leaders to follow suit.
A proposed action is to protest to the Canadian authorities, consulates and embassies and urge them not to tolerate any longer that this country’s name should be associated to such an infamy.
An international Association for the Reconstruction of Imwas has its seat in Fribourg and it is committed to the proposition that peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through justice. Palestina Resisteix considers channelling the support to their campaigns in Catalonia.
