English to Thai: Personal Pronoun Usage in Thai Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English 2. The Relative Complexity of Thai Personal Pronoun Usage.
There seems to be a tendency to try to translate English personal pronoun usage directly to
Thai pronoun usage (Campbell & Shaweevongse 1957, Noss 1964). That is, some l inguists
try to categorise Thai personal pronouns as in Table 1 above. However this has lead them to
difficulties because of the great variety in form and usage of Thai Personal pronouns. For
example, Noss (p.99) constructed a table of pronouns in which each pronoun needed multiple
entries to cover their multiple lexemes. His table also included the parameter of ‘Situation’.
The fact that situation, or social context, is a relevant factor in personal pronoun usage leads
the discussion to the core issue of Thai Personal Pronoun usage. The great variety and
variability of PP usage in Thai initially appears quite confusing, as the parameters for
pronoun choice extend beyond Person, Gender and Plurality/Singularity. Palakornkul’s work
(1972) emphasises the complex social factors that help govern pronoun choice in Thai,
including the one that Noss touched on, situation. Palakornkul describes in detail some of the
cultural reasons behind the choice distinctions and argues that it is not possible to disassociate
the social factors from the linguistic factors in trying to understand personal pronoun usage in
Thai. Campbell (1969) also takes this socio-linguistic approach.
2.1 Socio-linguistic Approach in understanding Thai Personal Pronoun Usage.
It is obviously necessary to take into account the social aspects as well as the strictly
linguistic aspects of language, as language has developed as a tool for society and as an
integral part of society itself. Thai Personal Pronoun (PP) usage is no exception to this
necessity. In fact, Thai PP usage reflects the complex ‘class’ structure in Thai society.
Indeed, it seems as if it is this complex societal structure which makes Thai PPs so difficult to
understand for the new language student of Thai. Thus there is a need to approach the topic
with a two-pronged investigation – on one hand dealing with socio-cultural aspects and on
the other dealing with the linguistic aspects.

Mr. Nitikorn Chaiyasit, an energetic 33 years old university-lecturer from Kalasin, the northeast of Thailand, who puts fully efforts to the teaching and learning of English language through the whole of his life.
Major of English is his B.A, earned in 2003, and English for Careers labels the degree of M.A that he accomplished in 2005. In areas of his professional success, he spent almost seven years working as a specialist teacher (Physical Education teacher) in international school in Nonthaburi, from 2003 to 2009, Thailand. After that, he was recruited in 2009 as a qualified English lecturer at Kalasin Rajabhat University located in the northeast where is a place he is currently employed. In 2011, he was promoted to further studying the Doctoral degree in Public Affair Management, College of Local Administration, KhonKaen University. The program is a special-joint program with the collaboration between Khonkaen University, Missouri University, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Michigan University and Northern Illinois State University
In terms of translating ability, he is not only be able to translate and summarize general English sources but is eligible to deal with some complicated English text books in different areas, for example Politics, Educational teaching instruction, sports events, environmental issues, public services issues and other related fields.
Apart from his regular works and studies, he has been often hired to translate and summarize research articles and journals for local students and educators.
