English to Spanish: In Celebration of my African Roots
Source text - English In Celebration of my African Roots
My paternal grandfather had a dark
skin. His name was “Habash” and Habash in
Arabic means a man from Abyssinia. He was
born in the midst of forest trees on the shores
of Lake Victoria Nyanza. From here the long
voyage of the river Nile begins, from here he
travelled to Abyssinia. Was he trying to
discover the course of the Nile? Did he travel
alone, and how old was he? When I used to
ask my grandmother her thoughts seemed to
stray, and her eyes would no longer be
looking at me. “No” she would say, “he was
not alone. His mother was with him all the
way. He was only a boy in those days, strong
and sturdy, but not yet seasoned enough to
reach the plateaus of Abyssinia on his own. It
is the women in our family who have always
known the way”.
Translation - Spanish En honor a mis raíces africanas
Mi abuelo paterno tenía la piel
oscura.
¿Acaso
trataba de descubrir el curso del Nilo?
¿Viajaba solo? ¿Cuántos años tenía? Al
hacerle estas preguntas a mi abuela, su
pensamiento se dispersaba y apartaba la
mirada. “No −me respondía ella−, no iba solo.
