Alla, from the one word in question, I really can't tell if reference is to the backyard or worldwide. Taxonomy is just a scientific classification of organisms according to similarities and differences between them. Your long list tells me nothing but names from high to low. The Russian Guide I mentioned gives a description of mammals from family to species, colored pictures of them, maps of where they live, drawings of their skulls, teeth, etc., what they eat, etc. As for your dwarf hamsters, there are 8 species, all of which are of the genus Cricetulus (one now classified as gen. Phodopus). Taxonomic classifications change routinely with organisms being switched to other species, genera, etc., as more knowledge is gained through, e.g., DNA. If you prefer reading taxonomic lists (which do you prefer: classical, numerical, experimental, cytotaxonomy, or others?), that's fine. Personally, if I want to find out the meaning of something, like "hamster" or " Bol'shoi" I use the appropriate dictionary. But to each his/her own. Maybe Olga could offer more info on the generality or particularlty of these fuzzy little beasts since we're spinning in an exercise cage.

Jack, why do you think the asker asks about Soviet/Russian hamsters only? I think it is all about hamsters in general. And my point is: even the hamsters in ex-soviet territories belong to different genera. For taxonomy I prefer specialized resourses devoted to taxonomy rather than dictionaties.

Alla, so what's your point? When the country changed from USSR to Russia, did hamster change to hampster? As a kid I had Chinese hamsters, Syrian hamsters as pets, but not Soviet/Russian ones, about which I presume the question is aimed. I'm only quoting Guide to Mammals of the USSR, but the terms can also be found in Vol. 3 of Novyi Bol'shoi Russko-Angliiskii Slovar', Lingvistia, Moscow, 1997.

Jack, you are talking about USSR fauna, But hampsters live not only in ex-USSR. Other genera of hampsters (apart from Critecus and Criteculus) exist that are popular as pets and experimental animals.

каждая из этих двух групп (хомяки и хомячки) объединяет грызунов разных родов (см. классификацию в моем ответе). Поэтому, если нужно соблюсти научную точность, то роды лучше перечислить отдельно для хомяков и для хомячков . А если нужно кратко, то перевести "hamsters and dwarf hamsters"

neutral Alla_K : genus Cricetus включает только род Хомяк Обыкновенный. А есть еще род Средние Хомяки и род Каннский Хомяк. Все они - представители семейства Хомяки, но все хомячки (а не только род Cricetulus) тоже предст. этого семейства. Такой перевод неточный.
