с неясной греческой надписью

Russian to English Art/Literary Archaeology
In what sense неясной? Can't be read, or doesn't make any sense?

Thanks!

(the little squares are Greek words that didn't copy, just ignore)

Что среди аваров были христиане, то ли свои, то ли византийские, следует из материалов раскопок: в аварском могильнике VI в. на Балатоне найден посеребренный крест с надписью («свет жизни») и серебряная капсула с изображением св.Петра и надписью , а у Завода, в погребении VII-VIII вв., крест с неясной греческой надписью.

illegible greek inscription

Two lines of illegible ancient inscriptions found just below the Buddha image are most probably “Proto-Bengali” style. The illegible inscriptions are most probably of 10-11 century AD, researchers said.

Peer comment(s):

agree Anton Kunin : "Illegible" sounds logical here, because in this sentence we already had an inscription with a translation, then an inscription without a translation, and the last one is not mentionned at all. I think it was just illegible

Thank You! that was my thinking too, as well as having come across illegible+inscription in archeology books.
agree glazein : yes, illegible, pretty sure thats what they mean. it may mean that it was unintelligible but then they would say - непонятная надпись. in this case is very likely the inscription was so damaged that only some parts were legible.

Perhaps this is more precise than the Russian.

unintelligible

That would cover both meanings, wouldn't it?

A google search turns up many, many "unintelligible inscriptions" in archaeological contexts:

Thank you, Dr. Lofthouse.
disagree Stephen C. Farrand : Sorry to be picky, but unintelligible really comments on the receiver, not the source. This quote says that it's Greek, so it's not unintelligible. Illegible or badly damaged is better

An interesting way of looking at it. Thank you, Stephen.
