Hi everyone,

Does anyone know how to activate the Text Edit Tool which is part of the Commenting function in Adobe Reader? I have to proofread using this function but unfortunately I cannot activate it. I tried it on different PC-s with different versions of Adobe Reader. The sender has allowed commenting and everything must be OK but it still doesn't function.

I appreciate your help!

Enabling commenting in Acrobat Reader Mar 6, 2012

Be sure first that the document's creator activated the Add Comment feature in the document when it was created.

Hallo Maria,

As far as I know, you have to use Adobe Acrobat to comment on a PDF file, at least for the older versions of Adobe Reader.

Does the new version have this function?

Best,
Bin

Adobe Reader vs. Adobe Acrobat Mar 6, 2012

Some time ago, only Adobe Acrobat was able to use this tool (Adobe Reader is "light" version of Acrobat). But now, even Adobe Reader has this feature enabled. Please make sure that you have the latest Adobe Reader X (10.1.0) installed: http://get.adobe.com/cz/reader/

And then use View/Comment/Annotations to insert comments.

Cheers,
Gerard

Thank you all for your help but it still doesn't work Mar 6, 2012

Hi again,

Thank you all for your time - I appreciate it!

I tried on Adobe Reader 9.5. and 10 and the only tool which is possible to use is Sticky Notes and Highlight Text. The Text Edit Tool remains inactivated even if the creator of the document enabled commenting. Sticky Notes doesn't help me at all to edit as it is just... sticky notes.

Once again thank you very much!

Maria

Touch-up text tool? Mar 6, 2012

Is that the tool you mean?
ASAIK, you need the full Acrobat to do text edits in a PDF. What is the purpose of this effort, though? To implement changes in the content of the pdf file? Using text edit is about the worst possible way to do it, unless you're just changing a letter or two. Whenever I've had to use the function, it's been *sloooooow* and very clumsy, with spacing and breaks changing in unexpected ways. It's the worst of way of changing a pdf that I can imagine (again, unless the changes are truly minimal). Much better to just mark up the file and have someone change the source, or process the pdf in compatible CAT tool.

Thank you once again! Mar 6, 2012

Thank you Bin,

I regret so much taking this assignement! But now I have to finish it and as the client wants it that way I now have to download the Acrobat Trial Version as I see - thank you so much for your suggestion!

Thank you Rudolf,

Client wants it in PDF - a very odd choice in my opinion. Now I know that I am not alone in my perception. Thanks!

Kind Regards

Maria

Wait, Maria, just another suggestion... Mar 6, 2012

Before I had Adobe Acrobat, I had commented PDF files with screenshots and arrows pointing to the text in Word files. It's very time-consuming, but it works.

All the best!
Bin

You must ask to the document's creator to activate Add Comment, otherwise you can't add any kind of comments.

mail your file to enable it! or you can do it by downloading Trial version from Adobe website (require registration).
