This paper theorizes the concept of laog in poetry, using my lived experience as a mantra meditation practitioner, and the Bhagavad-gita as framework. Using Mintz’s Bikol Dictionary, the meanings of laog that I used in my theorizing are: to enter or to get inside; and something/someone is inside or what/who is/are inside is/ are of value. With these definitions on laog and using the confluence of my mantra meditation practice, and the Gita, I came to formulate these concepts: The body is a vessel. And we are invited to get inside, and go deep. Be self-realized. The body/ vessel is different from what is inside. Not a thing is inside but someone: a person, the atma, or the spiritual entity that is of value. The entity’s value is based on its natural occupation that is bhakti or devotional service to the Supreme Entity. This paper specifically seeks to examine the imagery of happiness, and of the soul in the selected poems of Borlagdan from his collection Kakanan sa Aroladaw to define the concepts of laog. Borlagdan’s collection is a Bikol poetry not because it is about Bicol as a place, people, food, or culture. But because Bikol is used as a language. Language is another vessel to embody the laog, what is inside, that is of sense and with essence. The laog of Kakanon sa Aroaldaw is what is written by Borlagdan in his FB profile: “Ako an kalag sa lawas na laogan. Ako an buhay na laog sa laogan na gadan.” “I am the soul inside the body that is a vessel. I am the living inside the vessel that is dead.” The soul is inside the vessel. The soul is inside Borlagdan’s collection. The soul that is interconnected and interchangeable with happiness is inside the Kakanon sa Aroaldaw.

Ang papel na ito ay isang pagsasateorya ng konsepto ng laog sa tula, gamit ang aking pang-araw-araw na karanasan bilang nagsasagawa ng mantra meditation, at ng Bhagavad-gita bilang balangkas. Gamit ang Diksyonaryong Bikol ni Mintz, ang mga kahulugang aking ginamit sa pagsasateorya ay: to enter or to get inside; and something/someone is inside or what/who is/are inside is/ are of value, pumasok o pumunta sa loob; at ang anoman/sinoman na nasa loob o ano/sinong nasa loob ay may halaga. Sa mga kahulugang ito sa laog at sa pagtatagpo nito sa aking pagsasagawa ng mantra meditation, at sa Gita, nabuo ko ang ganitong konsepto: Ang katawan ay sisidlan. At tayo ay maaaring pumasok sa loob, at sumisid ng malalalim. Makilala ang sarili. Ang katawan/sisidlan ay kaiiba sa kung ano ang nasa loob. Hindi bagay ang nasa loob kundi isang pagkatao: isang tao, ang atma, o ang espiritwal na identidad na may halaga. Ang halaga ng entidad ay nakabatay sa likas na okupasyon nito at ito ang bhakti o ang paglilingkod ng may debosyon sa Kataas-taasang Lumikha. Ang papel na ito ay naglalayong masuri ang imahe ng kasiyahan, at ng kaluluwa sa mga piling tula ni Borlagdan sa kanyang koleksyon na Kakanan sa Aroladaw upang mabigyang kahulugan ang mga konsepto laog. Ako an buhay na laog sa laogan na gadan.” “Ako ang kaluluwa sa loob ng katawang sisidlan. Ako ang buhay sa loob ng sisidlang patay.” Ang kaluluwa ay nasa loob ng katawan. Ang kaluluwa ay nasa loob ng koleksyon ni Borlagdan. Ang kaluluwa na siyang konektado at maaaring humalili sa kasiyahan ay nasa loob ng Kakanon sa Aroaldaw.

I’m John Henry Briones, a second year Masters of Arts in Social Studies student of Bicol University Graduate School and presently working on my Masters of Arts thesis. You are invited to take part in this research study. Joining the research is voluntary and you may withdraw your consent for any reason at any time. You were selected as a possible respondent because of your expertise and knowledge of historical distortion. Before consenting to participate in the study, please read this form carefully and don’t hesitate to ask questions about the study.
The purpose of the study is to assess the historical distortionism from the lens of the Araling Panlipunan Teachers of Camalig. Specifically, the sources of information used, perception of distortion, knowledge of distortion techniques, and appreciation of historical method. The research also aims to find the strategies used to confront historical distortion and educational activities that will improve teachers’ awareness. If you agree to participate, you will be one of the 84 participants identified by the researcher. Joining the study does not affect your job and any work-related evaluation. Also, you will be asked to answer the survey-questionnaire. The interview, on the other hand, is intended only for the Araling Panlipunan department head and will be conducted at a time and date agreed upon by the researcher and respondent. The interview will span for about 15-30 minutes. The data gathered from this interview will be recorded with your consent using a voice recorder/gadget.
The information and data collected from the study will be completely confidential. This study adheres to the Data Privacy Act of 2018, where your personal information will be utilized for documentation and profiling. Rest assured that I will use an alias or initials to keep your identity hidden and anonymous once I present the teacher’s profile in the study. The information and data collected will be kept safe and only the researcher will have access to it. Once the information and data served its purpose, the researcher will destroy them after the academic year 2023-2024.
The benefits of participating in this study is that you’ll gain new knowledge about the subject. Aside from it, you’ll be exposed to examples of distortion happening in the Philippines. Your participation will provide the researcher with the information and perspective needed in the study. Further, your suggestions and recommendation will enhance the data collected. The researcher will provide you with simple token of appreciation after answering the survey questionnaire and interview proper. Again, I would like to emphasize that joining this research is voluntary. If you feel uncomfortable about the study and wish to withdraw your consent, don’t hesitate to contact me.
