MDF is inexpensive and is the best
choice for flat work because it’s flat and stays
that way.With its exceptionally smooth surface,
MDF is a favorite for veneering or
high-end paint work, and it’s another great
material for making jigs. The cons: It’s
heavy, making it difficult to handle in the
shop; it won’t hold fasteners well; it bends
under heavy loads; the rough, porous edges
of the panels need filling or edgebanding;
and when exposed to moisture, it swells
irreversibly.
