IN A TEAM MEETING, YOU NOTICE one of the normally articulate members doodling and looking glum. You could immediately call them on it but instead, you wait until after the meeting and gently pull this person aside. Tactfully, without appearing to pry, you ask, ‘You seemed unusually quiet in there, and I just wondered if anything is the matter?’ That is when you discover your team member’s wife has breast cancer. You not only feel sad and show it, you also urge him to take the rest of the week off, to be at home and support his wife during this difficult time.
This example of emotional intelligence (EI) in action helps explain why some managers thrive, while others mark time, or fail altogether. To succeed in your new role, you need to grasp the essence of EI, and keep developing your EI throughout your career in management.
When you perceive why someone says something or behaves in a certain way, or realise when feelings in a meeting are running high and act accordingly, you show emotional intelligence. You also show it when, despite feeling angry, rather than exploding or suppressing it, you chose to redirect your anger more productively.
Soft is often the hardest
As its name implies, emotional intelligence is the ability to manage yourself and your emotions and relate to other people’s emotions. These so-called ‘soft skills’ are in fact the hardest to learn-they do not come neatly packaged as a discrete set of techniques. Yet in explaining why people succeed in their job they matter twice such as conventional IQ (intelligence quotient) or technical skills, argues researcher and author Daniel Goleman, who helped put EI on the map.

I offer translation, proofreading, and editing services in Malay and English pair. I have a total of 10 years of experience in all 3 services. I have so far translated 3 published books (technical and non-technical), various documents, certificates and subtitles. I have also proofread and edited a number of academic and non-academics documents, books and journals.
I specialize in any general and technical document namely IT related documents. Having IT as my background, IT manuals is my passion.
