Took it as a trophy Dec 1, 2023

I took it as a trophy - from a person who wasn't able to prove their right to wear a smartphone! Alas, next time I met this guy once again and he took my airpods - that scoundrel exercised a lot.

This year actually Dec 1, 2023

My previous phone's USB port had worn out so much it would no longer hold the cable at all.
Went for actual quality made in Germany without stuff I find useless on a phone (latest processor, 120Hz display) and with a user-replaceable 5000 mAh battery (second battery included!) for half the price of the usual Korean or American designer fare.

I dislike mobile phones, and they live a life of their own in my hands! I have deleted countless videos of my feet walking along, but cannot always find pictures I take myself.

Sometimes, however, I can get it to show me a route, or show pictures of my grandchild. I can read the newspaper on the phone too, but it is so much easier on the large computer screen.

Otherwise the phone rings at inconvenient times and advertisers and spammers are beginning to find my number. I

I've lost mine and never replaced it. Dec 1, 2023

I think it was while I was walking the dogs. Or was it while weeding my strawberry plants? Anyway, never replaced it.

Don't miss it - thinking of my planet (smartphones are not good news in that repect) and emails are more than enough. I also share Christine's annoyance at smartphones doing the most annoying things, at the most ridiculous time and of their own volition.

To be honest, I must say my partner is pestering me to get one of the basic ones - you know the sort

To be honest, I must say my partner is pestering me to get one of the basic ones - you know the sort I mean: the ones you use only as a telephone and for nothing else. I've not given in so far, but Christmas is round the corner and I might well receive one as a present. That wouldn't be a surprise, surprise...

Fair enough. The basic ones can be useful at times.

Edited for syntax.

Bought a Samsung Galaxy S8 in April 2018.
Still works fine, still does what I need it do.
Had to have the battery replaced a couple of times.
No plans to change it any time soon.

poll question "When did you buy your last new smartphone?"

I don't remember. A long time ago. Years. And I have no plans whatsoever to buy a new one.

It was a mini Samsung. Before, I used a dinosaur Nokia phone for a very long time.
After the mini Samsung, I only bought refurbished iXXX phones. They work fine and cost 1/4 of the original (exaggerated) price.

Last month Dec 1, 2023

My Nokia 6 2016 finally gave up the ghost after 8 faithful years. Bought a Redmi Note 12s to replace it. I'm not sure how long the Redmi will last, but I'm already in love with fast charging and a 4-day battery life. The only gripe is that the camera is off-centre and protrudes from the condom case, which means I can no longer tap the top left of the screen while the phone lies on a table.

I had to when I was informed the Android version of my previous phone was too old for an app I needed to install.
A charge still lasts 3 days, likely because I hardly use it.

The question may relate to "buying new" versus "refurbished". I've never bought refurbished phones.

My 7-year-old cell phone was working fine until about 2-3 months ago, when it started to not have access to cell service. I finally took it to the service provider. So I got a new phone last month and set up service with a different provider. I kept the old one active because it would still send and receive texts, even though calls didn't work (incoming or outgoing). I didn't cancel the service yet, allowing some overlap time.

After I got the new one all set up, the old one started working normal again!

Last time I bought one was in 2015, then I got another new one as a Christmas present in 2018. The screen is cracked and there are peculiar black blobs that change size. They were getting bigger when I was on holiday, when I got back they got smaller again. I went to a shop to ask how much it would cost to mend the screen and since then they've got even smaller so I don't think I'll bother mending it for the time being.
