Healthy habits Jun 12, 2020

Hi,

When no working:

* My computer is turned off at the end of the day and on week-ends
* My mobile phone is turned off around 09:00 p.m. every day (unless I am out with friends) and on week-ends, I am not paying too much attention to it.

It leaves me time to get other things done, to be with my family, to walk, to read a good book (Le Cinquième Témoin (The 5th Witness,) from Michael Connelly at the moment, which I highly recommend).

Have a nice and (healthy) day!

Somewhat healthy! Jun 12, 2020

Besides work, I’m not a heavy Internet consumer, I prefer reading books (paper), walking my dog, watching TV, being with my family…

I am confused Jun 12, 2020

Does the question ask if I... ahem.... visit certain places online deemed by some to be unhealthy or morally turpitudinous?

Maybe whoever is asking these highly relevant questions needs to practice clarity of expression a bit?

Oh, and for the record, I only visit places that contribute to my overall health, in whatever way it is they are contributing:)

The Internet is used only for work on my PC or laptop. All devices are turned off after work and having taken care of private email correspondence. The sight outside is much too beautiful to be ignored. And they say that the color green is good for the eyes.

Unhealthy how? Jun 12, 2020

Misha, I answered as unhealthy not considering morality but considering how often I check social media and news.
It is stressful, therefore unhealthy, because of the content available at the moment. Confinement, politics, manifestations, virus, people doing crazy stuff...

No Let-Up From The Internet Jun 12, 2020

I'm now laid off for about the next month before I get back to work on last-minute tasks related to my latest book translation. But I'm still on the Internet several hours a day so I can be constantly informed about what's going on in the United States and the world, and therefore, be an informed voter.

Overworking myself Jun 12, 2020

I am connected all day long, even after work since I used social media to communicate with family and friends as well as read newspapers articles online.
But this is somehow an unhealthy habit as it doesn't really allow me rest.

Define "healthy"! Is it assumed that it's healthier to do something else besides use the Internet?

As a writer and landscape designer, I use the computer quite a lot for other things. I do intensive online research for my books and for plant selection and care. I also write a lot of email letters to friends and family. I spend hardly any time on social media.

Would it be "healthier" to watch TV? Not for me. I feel that my life is more meaningful following my creative pursuits, which necessarily involve the Internet. I also exercise, garden, take daily walks, clean, cook, and read books.

The way I understand this question is how your internet habits affect you. If you are online all the time and it makes you happy, I see nothing wrong with it. Staring at TV or watching your neighbors all day just to be "offline" wouldn't be any better. Internet can be great and useful for a lot of things, but it can also be extremely frustrating if you give it the power over your mind and your life. That's what I call "unhealthy".

(I'm commenting here now because I've got work to do today. Otherwise I'd be out and happily disconnected until Monday or at least until the evening when I might watch a movie online or check something that interests me)
