AMOUR: THE STORY OF LOVE TRANSCENDING AGE AND DEATH

On the 24th of this month, the whole world would be waiting, with bated breath, for the announcement of the Oscar Awards. Even today, the Oscars are perceived to be a synonym of the highest level of quality in the world of cinema. A mere nomination for these awards ignites the public interest towards a film, which benefits it in both commercial as well as artistic ways.
One of the films nominated this year in various categories is ‘Amour’. Amour is a French word, meaning ‘love’. This film by Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke has been nominated for Best Film in the Foreign Language category. 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva, the lead actress of the film is the oldest woman to be nominated for the Best Actress category. Also, Michael Haneke has been nominated for the Best Director and the Best Original Screenplay categories.
This film is totally different from the others screened in 2012. Its unique style, narration, and presentation warrant its reception as an unconventional film. The film is a story of an old couple Georges and Anne. Both are retired music teachers and have lived 8 decades of their life. They are deeply in love with each other. They also have a daughter living abroad. One morning, Anne suffers a stroke that paralyzes the right side of her body. Her nursing is Georges’ responsibility now, who performs it with wholeheartedness and devotion. But despite all the treatment and vigorous attempts, her condition keeps deteriorating day-by-day, finally resulting in her death. That’s it, the story of Amour.
This uneventful, solo performance-oriented story transforms into a humongous cinematic experience in the hands of Michael Haneke. Veteran French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant and actress Emmanuelle Riva’s immaculate performances have made it immortal in our memories.
Hundreds and thousands of stories related to love and death have been narrated through films in an equal number of ways but Michael Haneke has portrayed the influence of death and love on each other in a completely different style, approach, and surprising manner. Both the artists starring in the film have expressed the boundless depths of love advancing towards death in the last stage of life with impeccable adeptness, sensitivity, and sensibility. The director has captured the entire action within the confines of the four walls.
The specialty of this film is its honest expression. Devoid of any superficiality, melodrama, or pompousness, it straightaway touches the depths of your heart. Amazing camera movement and the perfect combination of lights deepen the impact of the film. It doesn’t have any unnecessary elements. We don’t know anything about the old couple. The film begins at the point where 80-year-old Anne has suffered a stroke just a day before. The director doesn’t feel the need to acquaint us with who or what these two were during those 80 years. Nor does he take his tale to any past events or flashbacks now and then. It’s the story of the present. Anne’s death is inevitable. The husband-wife duo cannot prevent it and this ‘tone’ permeates the entire film. It’s not a film about conquering death but accepting it with grace.

While articulating new definitions of love and relationships, the film leaves us with many questions, like: Does life always remain worth living? Is it possible for another person to understand your pain in its entirety? What is of utmost importance for a dying partner in the last moments of life? Etcetera.
This film gives an impression of the dark shadows of a winter afternoon drifting away. It’s like a stream of water, flowing so gently under the dark clouds as if everything is almost stagnant. No storms, no noises. Only time, constantly moving on. Days continue to change to weeks and months on the calendar. The director intends to convey that death is not a public chorus but an ever-progressing personal journey. A journey of awakening within ourselves. The film has immense warmth and hope on its surface but carries an undercurrent of deep melancholy and despair flowing parallel with it.
Last year, this film was screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival of France, where it was awarded the greatest accolade of the event. Besides, it has bagged several awards and nominations in all international film festivals to date. It’s now to be seen how many Oscars join the list.

Bio

I am a full-time freelance linguist with more than 6 years of experience in providing a gamut of language services. A Native Hindi speaker with an MA in English Literature, I have always been fascinated by language and literature. I had always been an avid reader and hardly had to 'prepare' for my English and Hindi language and literature exams. This affinity for reading led me to pursue an MA in English Literature, during which I came across many translated works of famous authors both in English and Hindi.

It was then that I got attracted to the art of translation, and realized its importance. Having started my career as an English teacher, I took more and more interest in reading the translations of various works from Hindi to English and vice versa. This is when I knew that I wish to be a language services provider. I quit my job and began handling translation and related assignments from my friends and acquaintances. Delving deeper into the field, I got into transcription, subtitling, subtitles translation, and content rewriting, thoroughly enjoying the learning process and getting familiar with the technical and non-technical aspects of these services.

Beginning in the field of literature and progressing to newer fields with constant learning, I take pleasure in accepting the challenge of working in new domains (except the strictly technical ones like legal and engineering, etc) where I can exert my faculties and diversify my experience according to the need of the hour. With the increasing scope and need to reach global audiences and adapt to their specific needs and culture, translation and localization are a part of every aspect of businesses across the globe. I look forward to assisting in this process to the utmost client satisfaction.

Being artistic in nature, I have been involved in Hindi Theatre and related performing arts. This is where I was introduced to the world of media and entertainment and the linguistic aspect of the same. With the rising trend of OTT platforms and the availability of global content, translation has become a vital part of content creation. I love watching and listening to different types of content, which nurses my interest and understanding of transcription, subtitling, and translation in the domain. I absolutely love doing it!

Enjoying my work and the challenges and learning experiences it provides, I feel most fulfilled when I outrun my deadlines and deliver earlier than expected. It is not always possible, but I like to challenge myself in this way. Not to mention the challenge of maintaining the highest level of quality while trying to do so, because compromising the quality is not an option. I have full faith in my skills and love to work in a diverse range of domains and clients. Achieving client satisfaction is an addiction to me and keeps me going. I hope to continue having a long and adventurous journey through my work.
