Source text - Russian В космологии Билика центральное и самое загадочное понятие- Кангый. В привычном для нас понимании - это одно из воплощений Всевышнего, то, что мы обычно называем Вселенной, Космосом. Кангый структурирует мир и определяет место человека в нем. По алтайским поверьям Кангый это Всевышний - необъятный, непознаваемый, живой, слышащий, ясновидящий Высший Дух. Он выше, чем любой из богов, так как богов много, а Кангый один и един.
Перевести это понятие на русский язык весьма затруднительно. Мешает не недостаток словесного материала, а разница в строе мышления, мировоззрения. Этимологически по звучанию и внутреннему смыслу этого слова в нем "слышится" - "Сокровенное из сокровенных", "Святейшее из священных", "Кровное из кровных" и т.п.
"Тело" Кангыя охватывает всю Галактику. Его осью является Млечный путь, который тянется от Полярной звезды (по-алтайски Алтын Казык - Золотой Кол) через Солнце и планету Земля и уходит в сторону. Кангый находится в постоянном движении вдоль и вокруг своей оси - вращается, раскачивается как маятник, колеблется, "привязанный" к "Золотому Колу" Полярной звезды. Для нас, жителей Земли, это "Дух ноосферы".
Translation - English Kangyi represents the most central and enigmatic principle within Bilik cosmology. As we most commonly understand it, Kangyi is one manifestation of the highest, that which would normally be referred to as the Universe, the Kosmos. Kangyi gives the world structure and defines man’s place within it. According to Altai belief, Kangyi is the Highest and it is limitless, unknowable, a living, all-hearing and all-seeing High Spirit, higher than any other god, for gods are many, whereas Kangyi is one and whole.
Finding a Russian equivalent for the word poses quite a problem, not so much due to a lack of linguistic material but rather due to a difference in worldview and mentality. In terms of etymology, its sound and inner meaning, what one hears in this word is: “most sacred of the sacred", “most holy of holy”, "most vital, most pure” etc.
The “body” of Kangyi embraces the entire Galaxy. Its axis is the Milky Way and it runs from the North star (in Altai, Altyn kasyk, meaning golden stake) through the Sun and the planet Earth and then protrudes outwards to one side. Kangyi is in constant motion along and around its axis. It rotates, swings like a pendulum and sways, “attached” to the “Golden Stake” of the Polar star. For us, the Earth's inhabitants, this is the “Spirit of the Noosphere.”

Source text - Russian В монастыре мне рассказали: чтобы стать монахиней, нужно пройти выдержку временем, устоять перед мирскими соблазнами и искушениями. Затем следует принятие обетов: нестяжания (отказа от собственности), целомудрия (безбрачия) и послушания (абсолютного повиновения). Но перед этим есть еще две ступеньки в иерархии. Новоначальные и работающие на монастырские нужды женщины имеют статус трудниц. Тех же, кто получает благословение на путь в монашество, называют послушницами.
Феофан Затворник описывал этот путь так: «…он с самого вступления в обитель предает себя вседушно опытному наставнику и поставляет себя в такое состояние, как будто бы душа его не имела ни своего разума, ни своей воли. Подавив в себе чрез то самоуверенность и самоволие, вскоре избавляется от свойственной людям даровитым кичливости, приобретает небесную простоту и является совершенным в трудах и добродетелях послушничества».
Мне довелось увидеть эту «небесную простоту» на лицах некоторых молодых послушниц. С кругами под глазами и рано появившимися морщинками. Все на виду. Следы внутреннего борения косметикой не закрасишь. Она здесь категорически запрещена. Но женщинами монахини все равно остаются, даже зная, что уже никогда у них не будет ни семейного счастья, ни привычной человеческой любви.
Translation - English At the convent they said that to become a nun one must be able to overcome worldly attractions and temptations over a given period of time. Then follow the vows: non-possession (the renunciation of property), chastity (celibacy) and obedience (submission without reserve). Before this, however, there are two steps to climb in the hierarchy. The status of monastery worker is granted to newcomers and women carrying out tasks to meet the requirements of the convent. Then there are those who have received blessing for the path into monasticism who are called novices.
Theophan the Recluse described the path in the following manner: “…from the very moment that he enters the monastery, the monk places himself fully in the hands of an experienced spiritual advisor and enters a state of being as if his soul had neither mind nor will. Abandoning all self-opinion and self-will he soon rids himself of the conceit characteristic of the talented man and acquires a heavenly simplicity becoming perfect in the works and virtues of postulancy.”
I glimpsed this “heavenly simplicity” on the faces of some of the young novices. Dark circles under the eyes and early appearing wrinkles, all lain bare. The traces of inner struggle cannot be covered up here. The use of cosmetics is categorically forbidden. And still the nuns remain real women despite knowing that they will never experience the happiness of family life and marital love.

Учет велся в рамках Проекта ПРООН/ГЭФ Межрегиональной благотворительной общественной организацией «Сибирский экологический центр» под руководством И.В. Карякина, одного из ведущих специалистов по хищным птицам в России.
Несмотря на сохраняющийся пресс браконьерского лова, популяция в целом остается достаточно устойчивой: количество исчезнувших гнездящихся пар в среднем уравновешивается появившимися новыми, как правило — молодыми, парами. Тем не менее сокращение численности наблюдается и составляет в целом по региону не менее 3% за последние два года (2008—2010), в сравнении с 5,8% за предыдущие два года (2006—2008). Таким образом, можно говорить о снижении темпов падения численности. На отдаленных территориях наблюдается некоторый рост численности при практически полном исчезновении птиц в доступных для ловцов районах. Из 66 посещенных гнездовых участков балобанов занятыми оказались 53, а успешное размножение зарегистрировано в 31 гнезде.
Особенно заметный пресс лова сохраняется в Республике Хакасия и в Кош-Агачском районе Республики Алтай. На территории кластеров Хакасского заповедника «Камызякская степь» и «Холл-Богаз» исчезли последние три пары балобанов. В Чуйской степи на последнем известном гнездовом участке самка исчезла еще в 2009 году, и два года у гнезда держится одинокий самец.
Translation - English Results of Saker Falcon Population Count in the Russian Portion of the Altai-Sayan Ecoregion
Surveys to estimate saker falcon population size were carried out under the UNDP/GEF Project by the “Siberian Environmental Centre” headed by I.V. Karyakin, a leading specialist on birds of prey in the Russian Federation.
Despite the continued pressure of poaching the species population is generally concluded not to be imperilled. The number of nesting pairs disappearing on average equals the number of new arrivals which as a rule are young pairs initiating reproduction. Nonetheless, a decline in population numbers throughout the region has been observed. A 3% decline in the number of saker falcons has been observed over the past two years (2008-2010) in comparison with a 5.8% decline during the period 2006-2008. Observations therefore indicate that the rate of population decrease appears to be slowing down.
In remote territories population growth has been observed in nesting areas that had become almost totally extinct due to their accessibility to local hunters. Of 66 known saker falcon nesting areas 53 were noted as being occupied and 31 nests showed signs of successful breeding.
A particularly egregious example of hunting pressure has been observed in the Republic of Khakassia and in the Kosh-Agach region of the Altai Republic. In the “Kamyzyakskaya Steppe” and “Kholl-Bogaz” clusters of the Khakassia Reserve three remaining pairs of saker falcon have disappeared. In the last known nesting area of the Chuisky Steppe the female disappeared in 2009 and for two years the nest has been occupied by a lone male.

Возможность распространения огня обусловлена природными особенностями горного ландшафта: климатическими условиями, составом и структурой растительного покрова, спецификой рельефа, территориальная компоновка лесных сообществ. Соотношение площадей лесов различной горимости в связи с особенностями ландшафта определяет вероятность тех или иных естественных смен лесной растительности и определяется «оборотом огня». На территориях с редкими пожарами смена сосняков елью успевает завершиться, а ельники достигают климаксового состояния (с абсолютно разновозрастной структурой). При более частом воздействии пожаров эндодинамические процессы периодически прерываются, сосновые леса восстанавливаются на гарях или очищаются от подроста и второго яруса ели. В таких лесных массивах преобладают относительно разновозрастные ельники, которые не успевают до очередного пожара достигнуть состояния климакса.
Горный рельеф создает большое разнообразие лесопожарной обстановки. Положение хребтов к влагоносным ветрам, высотная поясность, различия в экспозиции, крутизне склонов и формах рельефа — все это определяет пестроту климатического фона и, как следствие, различия в сроках пожарного созревания лесных участков, продолжительности пожароопасных периодов, возможностях возникновения и распространения огня, определяют направления восстановительных сукцессий.
В соответствии со схемой биоклиматических подразделений (климатическими фациями) территории Алтае-Саянского экорегиона делятся на четыре климатические группы районов (климатические фации): избыточно влажные циклонические, влажные циклонические, умеренно влажные антициклонические, недостаточно влажные (субаридные) антициклонические.
Translation - English Features of Pyrogenic Succession in the Altai-Sayan Ecoregion.
The possibility of a fire spreading depends on natural features of the mountain landscape: climate, composition and structure of vegetation cover, terrain and geographical layout of forest communities. The correlation between forest areas with different levels of fire-risk and their specific landscape features determines the likelihood of various types of natural succession in forest vegetation. This is determined by the "fire turnover".
In areas with low fire occurrence the replacement of pine forest by spruce is complete, and the spruce reaches the climax state with a completely mixed-age composition. With more frequent exposure to fires, endodynamic processes are periodically interrupted, pine forests are restored in burnt out areas or are cleared of undergrowth and the second spruce tier. These types of forest area are dominated by relatively mixed-age spruce that fail to reach the climax phase before the next fire onset.
Mountain terrain creates a great variety of settings for forest fires. The position of mountain ranges in relation to humid winds, altitudinal belts, the differences in exposure, slope gradients and landforms are all factors which play a role in determining the diversity of overall climatic conditions. As a consequence they also have a bearing on the following: differences in periods of fire development in forest areas, duration of fire season, opportunities for the emergence and spread of fire, specific pattern of restorative succession.
In accordance with the scheme of bioclimatic units (climatic facies) given below the territory of the Altai-Sayan ecoregion can be divided into four climatic regions (climatic facies): perhumid cyclonic, humid cyclonic, semihumid anticyclonic, semiarid (subarid) anticyclonic.

TEN YEARS IN RUSSIA
I lived in Russia for over 10 years, first in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk and later in the Altai Republic. In Altai I was interpreting in conference rooms and offices but also in remote landscapes, sometimes on foot, sometimes on horseback, in the mountains, in hospitals, in yurts, around campfires, at sacred sites. Here I learned the three skill components essential to effective cross-cultural communication: relationship-building, cultural immersion and research.
