Importunate gentlemen and heaving bosoms: French genre painting

Enticing woods, spacious parks, wind-stirred curtains and disordered cushions wherever you look: the exhibition entitled “Poetry of the Moment” transposes the often undisguisedly erotic subject matter into a turbulent environment which, like atmospheric background music, transports the actual core message.
The “Masterpieces of French Genre Painting” originating from the 18th century range from the licentious lifestyle under the reign of Louis XIV through to the French Revolution and its social upheaval: steamy trysts in secluded parks and frivolous flirts in shadowy corners are set off against socially critical city views and portrayals of life and mores that depict the transition to modern life with both its lighter and darker sides.
The [Gallery] is exhibiting 110 works until 9 May, and thus provides a representative overview of a field of art that has seldom been presented in such scope and quality.

The newspapers of the Third Reich made the most of the murder of the Nazi Wilhelm Gustloff in Switzerland by the Jew David Frankfurter. In his cartoon for Het Volk, Peter van Reen primarily takes issue with Hitler’s claim that ‘we, upright Nazis, have never murdered a political opponent’. Following complaints from various parties, including the German newspaper Der Völkischer Beobachter, the editor-in-chief of Het Volk Johan Frederik Ankersmit was arraigned on suspicion of having ‘intentionally insulted the head of a friendly state’. The Germans were particularly upset about the ‘unfavourable facial characteristics of Hitler and the SA men’ depicted in Van Reen’s cartoon. Following protracted legal proceedings Ankersmit was acquitted on 4 February 1937.

Translation - English
Artists such as Picasso and, later, Warhol extend the blending of separated symbols that derive from the existing representations and image structures, just as if one were to apply Ferdinand de Saussure’s "Cours de linguistique générale", written before the start of the 20th century and equally groundbreaking for analogous processes in linguistics. Saussure’s differentiation of "signifiant" und "signifié", of sound and meaning – that in semiotics became a differentiation between description and the thing described, between the external aspect of a symbol (or signifier) and its core (or significatum), embracing both the outside and the inside of a mediatized object – is linked to the realization that a communicating person is able to transfer the external aspect of one thing to another. This is similar to the way that Ludwig Wittgenstein interpreted the handling of colour: "It is almost", he writes in his “Philosophical Investigations”, “as if we peel off the colour impression like a membrane from the viewed object.”

The distinction between signifier and significatum has, with the slogan “images as text”, become a characteristic of the ‘linguistic turn’ in art history. It serves to explain what happens with the adoption of and the construction with signifiers in art and the media communication that determines our society. In my opinion, pop art can be regarded as the type of art that has actively and consistently adopted the basic principles and insights of this process, especially in reflecting on the daily media routine in which the symbols increasingly refer to one another and the medium itself becomes the message. Be it Marilyn Monroe or Campbell’s soup cans: understood as a symbol separated from the vehicle, the image of the actress and the logo of the product refer to each other in their assimilated aesthetics. They are perceived as being of equal beauty, which prompted Andy Warhol to the inspired remark: "all is pretty".

Mr XX will be able to win the trust and confidence of his customers and colleagues because he is particularly conscientious in his work and, in his basic attitude, is very friendly, good-natured, service-oriented and collegial. He is goal-oriented and in this respect is a man of his word. ‘A promise is a promise’ would seem to be his motto. In our opinion he is also a true specialist: he has a sharp eye for quality and detail. Correspondingly he prefers to make decisions in a well-considered, thoughtful manner and hereby he will attempt to avoid risks. If he does not have all the facts and details at his disposal he will tend to ponder and weigh things up for a while before taking the plunge. When confronted with decisions which require a degree of boldness he could act more vigorously.

In groups Mr XX will prefer to act as a follower. He has no particular urge to put himself in the spotlight, and indeed he tends to adopt a rather modest, timid and obliging attitude. His personality profile confirms this picture and indicates that he tends to be introverted in terms of character. In new social situations he prefers to bide his time before revealing his hand.
We thus believe that it would be useful for Mr XX to increase his repertoire of influencing skills. During the role play, in which Mr XX was required to convince others of his point of view, it was noticeable that although he kept sight of his goal his approach had an excessively pleading quality. To a large extent this ultimately undermined the impact and authority of his presentation. He could gain in effectiveness by taking a more independent or autonomous approach.

Bio
My specialty is 'telling stories': precise, lucid and engaging texts relating to fields such as advertising, management, public relations, 'general interest' science and technology, psychology, the arts and literature, tourism, sports (especially martial arts), history, philosophy, politics and sociology.

I am an established freelancer and have been working successfully in my specialist areas for well over 20 years. One of my long-standing clients is the commercial translation agency of VU University Amsterdam. It was on behalf of this agency some years ago that I took part in the project to translate the NIOD (Netherlands Institute for War Documentation) report on the Srebrenica Massacre. To give one other contrasting example, I am also the long-standing regular translator of publicity material, reviews etc. for the Introdans Dance Ensemble (Arnhem). A full list of projects and clients would fulfil little purpose here - instead I would prefer to undertake a sample translation which focuses on the client's precise area of work.
