The trouble with Portuguese is that a word can have several meanings. 'aproximação' doesn't necessarily mean approximation: it can mean connection, liaison, link, proximity, comparison, closeness, etc. Of the many Portuguese, Port/Eng dictionaries I own, I find that 'connection' is a liaison or a link, and I strongly believe that in this context, that's what it is meant

Note from asker:
Vania - your answer is very logical and certainly fits the context. Do you know of any dictionaries or glossaries that have "link" or "connection" or "liaison" as one of the transations of "aproximação"? |
I appreciate all your efforts. It does not have to be a bilingual dictionary. It can be a monolingual Portuguese dictionary. |

rapprochement
FROM HOUAISS MONLINGUAL: restabelecimento de relações pessoais ou políticas; reconciliação entre pessoas ou entidades inimigas ou indiferentes entre si
Ex.: <promoveu a a. dos colegas com fins matrimoniais> <foram feitos vários esforços para a a. de palestinos e israelenses>
This is what occurred to me right away, but it can also mean "the development of a close relationship" whereas rapprochement implies that the parties were in the past not that friendly with each other before the aproximacao occurred.
So it depends on your context...what happened in the past?

looking back at your source sentence again, perhaps the witness (deponent) arranged CONTACTS between the two...or, as I said before, even a reconciliation depending on what happened in the past.
