German term

Gleitpartie

German to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation mountaineering
The author is talking about ascending Gunung Api, a volcano in the Banda Archipelago.

Here's the the whole passage:

Die Besteigung beginnt vor Sonnenaufgang und endet mit dem lohnenden Ausblick über die Inselgruppe noch vor der härtesten Mittagshitze.

Ein nachmittäglicher Spaziergang über die Muskatnussplantagen erholt dann von den Strapazen der Besteigung, die auf den letzten Metern unter dem Gipfel durch die unter den Füßen wegrutschende schwarze Lavarollerde immer wieder zur Gleitpartie geraten war.

I have posted it as a seperate question. Feel free to post suggestions there. Thanks.

@Daniel I suggest you post "Lavarollerde" as a separate question so as to be able to enter answer(s) in the glossary. Personally, I favor Alison's.
Alison MacG Jul 19, 2013:
lava scree? given that Rollerde is loose earth and Geröll is scree

Merapi (Gunung Api)
It appeared to be clear when we started, but that soon changed as the clouds moved in and we were hit with a hard drizzle as we struggled up the slick lava scree.

But climbing the volcano is no mean feat - it is 2560 metres high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly one-step-forward and two-steps-back edging up frustratingly loose, black lava, scree fields

agree Alison MacG : Also found this "are greeted with a stiff 600 feet of scree and small talus to the north ridge of 13631. The slip n slide fest takes it out of us" http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=12150 (although perhaps more suitable for US?)
