German term
Unmittelbar der Vertretung unterstellt
German to English
Bus/Financial
Finance (general)
Finanzcontrolling
This comes in the context of a presentation on control of public procurment in a German federal state. The "Örtliche Kommunalprüfung durch Rechnungsprüfungsämter der Kommunen" is **unmittelbar der Vertretung unterstellt**. The obvious direct translation of "unmittelbar der Vertretung unterstellt" would be "is subordinate to the representation" but I do not like the sound of that at all. What is exactly the "Vertretung" in this case? The Ämter are subordinate to the Rechnungsprüfungsamt? Then why is the "Rechnungprüfungsamt" called "Vertretung"? Help and comments gratefully received as always.

I suspect what they mean is "politische Vertretung", as the source below suggests:
"Wir, ...das LWL-Rechnungsprüfungsamt, sind die unabhängige Prüfinstanz des
Landschaftsverbandes Westfalen-Lippe..verstehen uns als verlässlicher Partner der politischen Vertretung, der Verwaltung und externer Auftraggeber."

If that applies here, too, the audit is directly overseen by local government and the municipal audit office reports directly to local government

IMO, the German term “politische Vertretung” does not solely refer to an elected body of lawmakers. Also, in the US, all entities involved in running some geographical area, i.e. local governments and assemblies, or often lumped together under the heading “government” in casual references. Still, I’d be happy to go with something less controversial. How about “elected representatives”?

: Sorry, but this doesn't mean anything. In the political world, surely those who audit government spending on any level are answerable to elected bodies.

The Role of Supreme Audit Institutions in Enhancing Good Governance for Public Assets
The important role SAIs play in promoting good governance typically results from their special position in relation to the government. For example, in many countries the SAI is the supreme body of state audit, independent in relation to the executive and judicial branches, and subordinate to the legislative branch.

: Nice research - which underlines that it can't be the government (executive branch). // I searched as well, but I couldn't find anything ...

Actually, it was your comment on Michael Martin's answer above that inspired me to search. Thank you, TonyTK :-)
