Could this be a form of malnutrition, as I found the term in this link in the context of discussing the symptoms of malnutrition (swollen stomach, etc.)

Soon after her arrival in Africa she began to keep track of children who came to see her with swollen bellies and legs, and whose skin were sometimes of a lighter colour than that of their parents

مرض الطفل المنبوذ " الكواشركور "
ماهو مرض الطفل المنبوذ ؟
فى السنة 1933 الميلادية قامت الدكتورة " سيسيلى وليامز " وهى طبيبة اطفال من جامايكا كانت تعمل آنذاك فى الساحل الذهبى فى افريقية بوصف حالة مرضية فى الاطفال تتسبب عن نقص شديد فى المواد الزلالية التى يتناولها الاطفال وقد كونت اسما اشتقته من اللهجة المحلية هناك للدلالة على المرض فاطلقته عليه وهو " كواشركور " ويعنى " الطفل المنبوذ " او " المبعد " عن ثدى امه عند مجيئ الطفل الجديد او حدوث الحمل عند الام مجددا فقد لاحظت هذه الطبيبة ان بعض الرضع والاطفال يصابون بهذا المرض فى فترة الرضاعة المتاخرة او فترة مابعد الرضاعة عندما يفطم الطفل من ثدى امه ويعطى بعض الاطعمة التى تعتمد على المواد السكرية وتخلو من المواد الزلالية ومما لاحظته هذه الطبيبة الباحثة ايضا ان الطفل وهو اسود يفقد لون بشرته السوداء والسمراء فيتغير لون بشرته ولون شعره الى اللون الاحمر المصفر او البنى الفاتح وهى تختلف من طفل لاخر باختلاف شدة المرض
