English term or phrase: strap-like
There was the jacinto bastardo or jacinto leonado (Dipcadi serotinum in Latin), ‘invisible but everywhere’, and Helianthemum alypoides, a rare gypsum specialist with attractive yellow flowers. Sarah tells me that a very knowledgeable friend of hers says that its local name, perdiguera de los yesos, probably refers to the fact that the plant is found in areas that are favoured by partridges. We came across the vivid green strap-like leaves of cebolla albarrana (Urginea maritima). However, those who assume from its name that it is edible should beware. Its bulbs are toxic and a subspecies of the plant is the source of rotenone which is used to make rat poison. We found Lomelosia stellata too, a small rose-purple flower called colloquially botón de soldado.
