The Power of Storytelling in Business

...................

Inside, the store was an eclectic mix of products, from watches and jewelry to art and clothing. I made a beeline for the shoes and left Michael to fend for himself.

To my great dismay, up close the shoes were atrocious. Blinding. I immediately felt a deep sense of guilt for abandoning Michael at the first glimpse of glitter. I ran back toward the front of the store where Michael was trying to hide behind a ***rotating tower of perfume bottles***. Just as I was about to grab him and head outside to the safety of the cobblestones, a very ambitious twentysomething Slovenian sales clerk appeared, as if from thin air, from behind the fragrance counter, just inches from where Michael was standing and called to him.

“Excuse me, sir. Were you looking for a scent?”

Oh, no, I thought. Oh, this poor kid is so far off.

Michael was most definitely not looking for a scent. Not only because looking for a scent would imply purchasing a scent—which we’ve already covered—but because Michael does not wear cologne. Ever. He’s not a scent kind of guy. He was only near the scent counter because he needed someplace to stand-slash-hide.

Which is exactly what I started to tell the salesman, but he didn’t seem to care. Instead, he delicately removed a navy-and-white striped box from an upper shelf of the ***display***.

“This is our best-seller,” he stated, his fingers (unusually long, I noticed) gently framed the box. We braced ourselves to be spritzed against our will.

Does "display" refer to the "rotating tower of perfume bottles" mentioned earlier?
Could it refer to some display rack behind the counter?

I have to admit that from the context ("a very ambitious twentysomething Slovenian sales clerk appeared, as if from thin air, from behind the fragrance counter, just inches from where Michael was standing and called to him.") it is a bit unclear to me where exactly the clerk was when he called to Michael - behind the counter or in front of it. If he was in front of the counter, the display, in my opinion, definitely refers to that rotating tower of perfume bottles. On another forum I tried to find out where exactly the clerk was when he called to Michael, but, unfortunately, people who replied did not answer that specific question directly:

Thank you.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

"rotating tower of perfume bottles"

most likely given the context

a display can be rows of items one behind the other or tiers of items in the round above each other. Here I think it's the latter, with the salesperson probably approaching him from the side, if the display in question is outside the counter, or from the back if the display is on the counter

"Michael was trying to hide behind a ***rotating tower of perfume bottles*

[...]near the scent counter...
sales clerk appeared, [...], from behind the fragrance counter, just inches from where Michael was standing

so this seems to me that there is a rotating display eiher in front of the fragrance counter and that the clerk cam out from behing the counter itseldf and the display (thus hidden from view until then)

fat fingers, sorry
came out from behind the counter itself

best guess is that this rotating display is in front of the fragrance counter and thus the clerk is hifdden from view behind the counter itself AND the display itself

On second thoughts, the words "he CALLED to him" imply he was not right beside Michael and thus still behind the counter and display

Sorry, it says he DOES indeed come out from behind the counter (and display) and he is only "inches" away from Michael which implies to his side. "call" seems a bit strange but it's retail speak after all

anyway he probably "called" as he was approaching him from behind the counter/rotating display

Thank you for so detailed explanation, Yvonne!

agree philgoddard : We can't be certain - perhaps even the author wasn't - but this seems the most likely.

thank you. Yes, on balance most likely to be a standalone display in front of the counter so salesperson was hidden from view until he came out from behind
agree Tony M : The context doesn't actually tell us for sure, but I agree that this seems the most likely scenario.
