Spanish term
piezas únicas
Spanish to English
Art/Literary
Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
This is specifically in relation to prints of which a single copy is made:
En cuanto a la técnica empleada, el periodista se detiene en los materiales exóticos aplicados, señalando que fueron realizados en Nueva York y son piezas únicas.
The idea is in opposition to prints of which a specific number of copies are produced ("10 numbered copies"). Is there a specific term for this idea (like "single copy") as opposed to the overly general "unique work"?
Thanks

The term "pieza única" is used generally, often relating to art, and may occur most frequently within product descriptions and art magazines. One may recognize use of the term during auctions and in museum exhibitions, which may focus upon the unique and possibly valuable quality of "piezas únicas."

Technically, they are copies, though some artists use this process to produce beautiful one-of-a-kind images on paper.

"pieza única" can of course mean a "one-off" or "very special", but Wendy states specifically that it is used "in opposition to prints of which a specific number of copies are produced".
I think it would be helpful to know what the printing technique was.
--Maybe it was one of the techniques that are used to create series (lithography, etching, etc.), but the artist decided to make only one copy.
--Alternatively, it could have been that the technique itself only allows for one 'real' print - subsequent ones usually impossible or very different (known as "ghost prints").
This second technique could be "monotype" or, as Thomas pointed out "monoprint". There is some terminology confusion - for futher details see the links below.
If this is the case, then the translation could simply be "monotype" or "monoprint".
