comunicación

Spanish to English Art/Literary
Similar questions have been asked before and I have searched the glossaries for a suitable translation, but I´m feeling fussy today. Below is the example I´m stuck on right now, but there are others through out the book:

Por esta razón, los mercados han sido siempre una referencia de
centralidad en **función de las comunicaciones** y de los medios de transporte disponibles en cada momento.

Some dictionaries give examples in English like "communications b/t cities", but as a native US speaker I would never say that or that something is "well-communicated".

any suggestions for example posted here? connections, routes? I´m stuck.
gracias a todos y todas

P.S. Jane, thank you for your suggestion. You are right--dictionaries should be a last resort and I needed to be reminded. Saludos.
Non-ProZ.com Dec 3, 2003:
Thanks to all of you. This is a word like eje that can be translated so many ways in English but is so easy and general in Spanish. I played with everyones suggestions a bit but used Mikes as a base. Nikki, thank you for thoroughfares, its always a good choice with comunicacin and I have used it in other parts of the text. Cheers, Madeline

Even though \"link\" is the word actually given, quite often we actually talk about \"connections\"

varying according to the communication and transportation means

...varying according to the communication and transportation means available at each given moment

I understand this means that markets have always been a central point of reference but subject to variations derived from the different means available. That is, the telex era, the telefax era, the SMS era, and their counterparts in transportation means.

COMMUNICATION HUBS

Allow me to give you a suggestion: dictonaries are a last resort. You are better off finding similar text. Read texts through google with similar contexts and other terms in your text and you are more apt to find the correct term. It's more about what you already know rather than what's in dictionaries, which usually do not work well.

cheers

disagree CMJ_Trans (X) : NO - hubs are central points - here they are talking about things that interlink places. So much forcast-iron certainty
